I've been visiting the site as a guest and learning alot. I thought it was time to say hi and thanks for the knowledge I have gained. I have been looking for a lathe for some time now (SB, Atlas, Clausing) but always a day late and short of buying a used lathe from out of state without inspecting it I placed an order with Grizzly for the G0709 and was given a ship date of Sept. 7th(?) Does anyone have any tips or tricks in getting it set up.
Thanks, Ron

Make sure it is good and level, buy the rubber feet Grizzly sells, and don't believe the oil amount they say is needed in the owners manual, it takes a lot less. It's a great machine for the money. Be careful if you've never run a lathe before and while the gear/lever settings are correct on my machine, always use a thread pitch gage to confirm the thread you are cutting.

I'm not 100% sure without going to look, but I believe it is Mobile and you will need two different kinds. I use DTE Oil Heavy/Medium ISO 68 in the gear box and Velocite Oil #10 in the carriage. These can be purchased at almost anywhere what deals in Mobile Oils but I got mine from Enco.

You might consider picking up a older used lathe. At times you can find them for next to nothing at auction. Even if you end up spending some money on repairing it. Check with your local MRO supply, they will sometimes know of someone that has a piece for sale. The stuff from China and Korea aren't noted for holding up that well. That was how I purchased my Bridgeport mill.

Re: Grizzly G0709

Grizzly has a very good referral program. Call them and ask if there is someone in your area who is already running this lathe.

I did so way back when, and Grizzly connected me with a fellow just a couple miles down the road. I was able to look at the milling machine I had in mind, and ask him about its performance. I ordered my mill the next day, and a larger lathe to replace my little 6" Atlas. Both have served me well for many years now.

Cheers... Jim
