Re: Gun caching
Surely a good metal detector would pick it up.
I found what may be an extremely old military cache. I didn't have enough guts to crack it open but only a handful of people found where I dug it up and most of them are family or friends anyway so there is a good chance it is still there.
The reason I suspect it may be an old forgotten military cache is the area was used as a training ground pre-WW2. It is a 44gallon drum buried upright which has had it's top end smashed heavily to remove the "perfect cirle" such that it looks very irregular(think not man-made). The top is sealed with cement which must be at least few inches thick because banging on the cement does not yield an echo, it feels quite dense. The top of the drum was only buried about a foot from the surface however the hole needed to bury it must have been 4 to 5 feet deep.
One of these days I'll go back and crack it open(I found it over 15 years ago but unlike using a pile of cow dung for a reference I know exactly where it is/was).
I have two good theories for opening it. One is to just smash the cement with a hammer, which if it is a cache is likely the best way to open it. The other is to dig around it a little deeper and use tin-snips to gently cut the cement filled top off completely.
Of course it could just be a barrel of toxic waste but I doubt it, someone went to a lot of trouble to make the top an irregular shape and I suspect so that it would not stand-out on some kind of imaging equipment.
