What I don't get is those "tough and rugged men with guns" are a lot of times ex military did these guys forgot about the oath they took or are they just following orders not to loose their careers.

Here in Texas, while not spoken out loud, that is the general perspective of Texas Democratic and RINO Legislators.
One of the main motivations for them would be career and financial stability. They are still regular men like us. They have families, young children, and elderly parents waiting for them to go back home at the end of the day. Problem is, their careers now involve removing other men from THEIR families because of some legislator's pen stroke.
The other motivation would be self interest and self preservation. They also see a society where the entire population is being forcibly disarmed and / or sent into detention for ideological offenses. They would want to keep THEIR guns and the state's good will for as long as possible. Even if it means breaking other peoples' jaws with jackboots, they would rather do that than be on the receiving end of those jackboots themselves.
They are basic, primary human motivations that apply to all of us. The worst Nazi mass murderers in the WWII camps also did what they done mostly because of these two motivators.
This changes, dramatically, when it becomes costly for them to continue being the servants of a tyrannical state. It does not bode well for the psychological health and morale of the entire body of the enforcement branch, when after each routine arrest and raid they suffer significant casualties of their own. And then to have that compounded with an additional death toll from 'gray man' counterattacks. When most of them realize: "Oh shit, this is happening to us?", the same self interest and self preservation instincts that made them become the state's enforcers will now compel them to desert and quit. Because it is not worth it anymore.
If possible, I'd suggest those fighting for freedom make sure that when the "raids" are done, they find nothing and nobody and instead while they are out on a mission to terrorize the freedom lovers at their homes, the freedom lovers are returning the favour with twice as much brutality to the families and homes of those who choose to be the storm troopers. It's one thing to go out being worried that you'll take casualties on the raid & you can prepare for that... It's another thing to be worried that you'll come home to find someone has gone all Vlad on your family and made an art installation out of them.
Grimace. That is one direction that should be avoided at all costs. Historically, groups that has crossed this line lost all support and earned enemies fast. And I mean FAST. Mike Vanderboegh has stated that the only appropriate response is surgical precision with no collateral damage.

They were fanatical cultists and socialists to begin with but they started with an explosive track record and gained enough followers to take on the Qing Dynasty in conventional battle. And they won all of them, early on.
Then they attacked the tri-city region (Shanghai-Hangzhou-Suzhou) and killed a lot of non-combatants. The tri-cities had no affiliation with the Qing or Taiping. They just wanted to do business, make money and trade.
But after the Taiping committed these atrocities on them...........Boy oh' boy they got the holy wrath of God Himself unleashed upon them. The tri-city syndicate raised 3 entire army groups all armed with Spencer and Henry repeating rifles to annihilate the Taiping. And to say "annihilation" is a gross understatement. Think severed heads on pikes stretching from Nanjing to Shanghai.
There is a difference between wanton collateral damage and specifically targeting the assets / safe places / things that are cared about of those who are doing the oppressing.

I fully agree with your point about the assets and property of the perpetrators being fair game, but the noncombatant family members should be off limits......If they become targeted, that will instantly put a lot of fence sitters against us. There will be no better way to be seen as terrorists by the general public. (The statist talking heads can call us "terrorists" all they want but having the general population actually develop a perception of us as being terrorists is a whole other matter).
The response to statist aggression should be only ruthless, cold and lethally accurate marksmanship directed with calculated precision into those who commit crimes against humanity against helpless citizens. The message is clear and simple: If you use force of arms against innocents, we WILL hold you accountable, with minute-of-enemy combatant precision. And we will not stoop to levels of barbarity, but deliver punishment right to those who clearly earned it.

I just realized that I can sit here and armchair-commander out endless scenarios of how an ideal course of resistance can go down, but in reality, when something like this do happen, there will be so many variables that we just cannot be in control over.
For example, one committee of vigilance / regional defense unit may be led so all of it's members practice civility even in the heat of combat, but another group may have wholly different ideas.
Warfare has always been brutish and hideous and no one in their right minds will deliberately seek it out, but we should be resting assured that it is not us who is pushing our society down that road, but those who want to disarm us and impose their will upon us. Do they realize the implications of what they are trying to do? I do not think so, otherwise they would have learned to leave law-abiding citizens the fuck alone long ago.
Pray for the best but always train and prepare for the worst. And buy more ammo.

If the Communists take over here and kick off an actual shooting civil war, there won't be any "being nice" or "playing by the rules" on any side.
Take a look at our current wars in the middle east, we are fine with drone fired missiles taking out a significant amount of "innocent" bystanders when getting a single target we want or "accidentally" hitting an "ambulance" or, Look at WWII, we happily firebombed whole cities of women, children and old people, and built special bombs to kill civilian firefighters, there was no playing "nice" on either side, the enemy had no scruples either & was way worse. It will get way worse here than most anticipate.
To win, it will take doing a lot more than most think need to be done as we will be up against a ruthless enemy that cares nothing about any "rules".
Hope it never happens, and then everybody can be happy.
