AKA self sufficiency. Extremely important for playing a long game. Compare a standalone castle by itself versus a fortified manor that includes a walled town with steel foundries and artisan shops, farmland, orchards, stocks of seeds in ready supply and access to groundwater in case the one river flowing past the manor is inaccessible due to prolonged siege...
Have you ever thought about freezing registration - ie no new members allowed for say the next 6 months? And make it so only current registered members can view the site at all? And then as said, revisit the situation after 6 mo.?

I second this motion. Except Id go a bit stricter, completely freeze new registrations entirely. Revisit after 6 months.
Maybe make a caveat that if 2-3 current members with at least 2-3 year old accounts vouch for someone, then MAYBE let em register. Perhaps vet their social media posts and other forum post history, etc..?? Just throwing out some ideas. We gotta draw a line in the sand YESTERDAY! SH can NOT be allowed to go up in smoke!!!

Who is gonna foot the bills, the traffic is a large part of that stream, I am moving away from an Ad based model, I think it's dead or at least dying, so I am working on other ways to engage members.
Money is always the answer, I have to have enough to run the place, that requires bills to get paid, which requires new members to join, people to Upgrade or at least look at the site.
The answer is always money, if you have enough to close the doors and turn up the air conditioning great, if not, the doors have to be open so more people can come in ...

It's basic stuff. If it was a serious attack by one of the big groups (state or non state) we would be offline. A site like this does not have the funds to build defense in depth against a coordinated and concerted attack at scale. Cyber is a significant chunk of my day job...
