Why????? IN MOST CASES are gun store owners and employees a-holes???? I just don't get it. Because of this I've bought the last 5 guns online.

I just want honest answers..
</div></div>

I worked at GAT guns in Illinois (probably the largest in the state) for 2 years and I think I can honestly answer this question :)

The owner is the biggest asshole I've ever met for one reason, he only cares about the $$$. This guy doesn't even care for his own son, who just so happens to be a manager there. He's a selfish pr*ck who could care less about you, the customer, and has little or no respect for his own employees! One of my co-workers called OSHA on this guy for unsafe work conditions and he was fined because of it. He even lied to a couple of range cleanup kids who wanted their lead levels check. He said they came back fine, when they were actually 5 times over the state limit. OSHA fined him for that too :)))

As far as the employees go, most of the guys I worked with had gotten very tired of stupid questions. The average shooter doesn't know nearly as much about firearms as the average shooter on this site does. I've seen some pretty brutal answers to some not so stupid questions on this site. Sometimes we are pretty ruthless to people who don't ask the right questions. Maybe some people listened to much in grade school when the teacher said "there's no such thing as a stupid question". That is definitely not the case. I've always tried to be as helpful as possible while working there, but when a customer comes in wanting a 9mm magnum beretta 92fs and won't listen to you when you tell him there's no such thing, don't be surprised if the next customer gets a little attitude. It's unfortunate, but I think we're all guilty of it sometimes :-( </div></div>

It seems like everytime I go there (maybe 9 times a year), your old boss is always yelling at you guys. He has a loud voice to begin with. I heard him use profanity for all customers to hear. Very unprofessional.

Re: gun store workers/owners

This reminds me of the ass hat customer that brought in his remy auto the day before deer season because he couldn't get the elevation dialed in. He calls first, then drives right in. Takes the gun out of the case waves it around the shop as he explains the problem. Hands it to me with the action closed like the #ucking ass hat he is. And I jack a live round out of the chamber.

15 minutes latter I send him out with a fixed gun and a bill for $50 and he has the nuts to tell me I am overcharging him.
So I tell him that normally I would do this for free, but being stupid is expensive and it's the only way you'll learn.

Funny he has never been back. Thank God.

Re: gun store workers/owners

There is only one gun store near my house, a family-owned small store a few miles away. The owner is an ex-Marine, and a great guy. I go in once a week for ammo, and usually end up having a nice conversation about new guns that he's getting in, or some such business. The whole staff there is truly a great group of guys. I guess I just got lucky. But I can understand the attitude. I was in there once and a customer was trying to get "magnum" rounds for a 9mm. I wanted to slap him myself.

Re: gun store workers/owners

A good gun store is like a good mechanic and a good Chinese restaurant. Once you find it you should never leave it. Most of the stores I have been in have been a tad less than helpful but then again when I go into most shops I know as much as or more then the people behind the counters anyways. Normally I am just looking for a good deal.

+1 with the exception on the Chinese food

There are dozens of over priced dick head tourist trap gun stores here that i will no longer set foot in. I have found one store (New Frontier Armory) with great staff and prices and use them exclusively.

Re: gun store workers/owners

Had two individuals and a small kid (2-3yr old) come into my shop today.
They weren't in the door 2 minutes and the kid barfs on my showroom floor. Not once, but TWICE in two different places.

After the Mom cleaned up, they proceeded with the transfer they originally came for. After a few minutes I noticed the kid was wandering around unattended... so I had to politely ask the parent to PLEASE keep ahold of the kid or take them outside before they puke again.

It took every ounce of restraint to keep my cool and be polite.

I couldn't fucking believe she actually stayed to complete the transfer and made the poor kid stand there for another 15 minutes while she was doing paperwork.

Had that been my kid, I would have been too embarrassed to stay and also too concerned about the kid. I would have cleaned up the mess and left.

Now the $25 she spent on the transfer will be used to rent a carpet shampoo machine.

Just another wonderful day in the life of an FFL.

I used to have a tv/vcr in the shop and the minute a kid came in, in went a video, kept them from screwing with every little thing in the shop. Alowed mom or dad to have a discussion with-out worrying about their little disasters.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Dragracer_Art</div><div class="ubbcode-body">You want to know WHY gun shop owners can be such a$$holes ?

Go through the required financial effort, business planning and BATF scrutiny to get your FFL and open your own gun shop... so you can work for peanuts and slim profit margins... trying to stay alive and compete with the kitchen table FFL's for transfer fees and retail chain stores for everything else..

After a little while, you will see firsthand the kind of jackasses that walk through the door.
If I had known the average gun customer was going to be so damn stupid, I never would have started my business. I made the mistake of assuming most people were like me and had at least an average understanding of firearms.
Instead, I only see a handful of decent, knowledgeable gun owners... and the remaining 80% just don't have a fucking clue. Those 80% however... will be more than willing to stand at the counter blowing bad breath in your face, wasting your time telling stories about the gun they sold and wished they hadn't... or the monster buck they shot but got away... or the gun collection their uncle has... or how ammo at Walmart is $1 a box cheaper… or how much they like a particular gun you have for sale... but will need to "save-up" before buying... that is, unless you are willing to put it on layaway and take $20 a month for the next 2 years. They also like to brag about having to come back in the year 20XX because they were convicted of a felony... but would still like to browse and handle your guns.
You'll also get to see ghetto thugs come through the door occasionally. They are especially entertaining; because they usually bring at least one female with them that can legally own a gun. How ironic is it... that SHE is the only one that wants the gun. The three other guys are just along to help her make an educated choice. Of course they will all get tough and raise hell as you throw them out of the store... but you damn well better put your peachy face back on and have a loving smile for the next guy that comes in 3 minutes later... or else he will be sure to get on an internet forum and tell the world how much of a jerk you are for not kissing his ass with a smile and a free box of ammo.
</div></div>That is an instant classic ^ All of that happens on pretty much a daily basis. I have seen all of the above mentioned happen and have never even actually worked in a gun store... Shit, the truth has been spoken

I'm not saying that gun store owners have any right to be a dick ALL the time (no one does, but some are) just saying that I can understand why they have their bad days.

</div></div>Most of the time thats about all they can fall back on... so when you leave, dumber than when you got there, without what you need you will be saying "at least he was nice" hahaha. Yes there are the occasional Dicks, Academy, Bass Pro and Cabela's employees who do know what they are talking about AND are friendly.

Not necessarily the case.
I've purchased guns online and dealt with kitchen table FFL's since some of the gun shops want 3 times what the kitchen table FFL want for transfer fees

Re: gun store workers/owners

You are going to run into good and bad in any business. The good will survive hopfully and the bad will move on. Maybe you got a guy on a bad day or after dealing with an idiot customer.

I've been in my share of stores/shops over the years and have seen quite a bit. Yes, uninformed idiots are about frequently. But being a gun shop owner, you had to know one of your duties was going to be to educate your customers. Sure it can get annoying after hearing the same thing over and over again, but if you do your customers that service they will remember it and give you their business.. probably more than a few times and spread the word that you are the person to see if you are looking for equipment.

I've also seen shops that have no idea what they are saying and give out really bad and incorrect information. Now I know not everyone works at home like myself and has the resources or even knowlege of how to research on the internet, but they should do their best to keep informed of their products. I have to at my job, so they should at theirs. These are usually the same shops that try to belittle you or look down on you even if you know they are blowing b.s. and smoke. The same goes for patrons as well. Same M.O... think they know it all and usually don't. Yeah.. stories out the ass.. let me handle all your stuff and walk out still talking about how a Glock can go through metal detectors.

I also know a lot of great shops with great guys/gals that do excellent jobs at customer service and could care less if you buy a gun from them as long as you are informed and safe. These are the shops that I go to and don't really care about the extra few dollars they charge over the big stores if I can support them and their business.

So my advice would be to maybe give the guys a chance.. if he's still a dick.. move on to the next place. I'm sure someone will be happy to take your money with a smile and positive attitude along the line.

OUT!

Isn't a 'kitchen table' FFL also a Firearms Dealer?
