When a service pistol receives approval by the West German government for sale to police (
Polizei) or military units, it receives a numbered “P” designation.
For years, the
Polizei relied on the
P1 (Walther P38)
P2 (SIG P210)
P3 (Astra 600) service pistols,
until the mid-1970s when the West German government adopted a number of new "revised P" requirements:
1. feature a DA/SA action
2. 9×19 Luger chambering
3. 8 round magazine capacity
4.ability to de-cock the pistol via an external safety or de-cocking lever.
P4 Walther quickly added the de-cocker to their P38.
P5 Walther later submitted an updated design to meet all the new requirements; the Walther P5 was unpopular to agencies.
The SIG P225 is a more compact version of the SIG P220.
The P6 was a slightly modified version of its P225 to conform with new requirements:
1. Heavier hammer spring (increased trigger pull weight)
2. modified barrel ramp (improved feeding for contemporaneous developments in hollow point ammunition)
3. deformation hammer (unique feature for armorers to identify potentially damaged firearms mostly from falling out of clumsy holsters)
4. P6 roll mark - Polizei
An estimated 40,000+ SIG P6s were in circulation before the
Polizei retired the SIG P6 in 2000.
P7 Heckler & Koch’s new PSP (Polizei- Selbstlade-Pistole or “police self-loading pistol”) ; it was too expensive for agencies.
Finally, In 2000, when the Polizei moved to the newer H&K USP (P8) and Walther P99Q, they eventually rounded up tens of thousands of P6 pistols and removed them from service. They then sold literally thousands of them to Century International Arms in Georgia (city... not state), Vermont whom imported them to the US and sold them as surplus police returns to civilians — usually for between $250-$300. For purposes of their import mark (which was required to be stamped on every P6 they sold), they tweaked their name to “Century Arms International” instead of “Century International Arms” to avoid the misconception that these guns had been imported by... the C.I.A.
