I finally had Lasik corrective surgery this afternoon. I've been thinking about it for years but the three eye infections I've had in the past year and the rather new difficulty I've been having focusing though the scope pushed me to go ahead and have it done.

The procedure itself was terrifying. Reminded me of a scene from "A clockwork orange" when they propped my eyelids open and stuck that suction cup on there. It was pretty painless thanks to the numbing eye drops but I wish they lasted 12 hours.

Everyone I talked to who had done the surgery told me that as soon as it was done they sat up and were amazed at the results. I sat up and couldn't see shit. Everything looked like I was underwater. The numbing eye drops began to wear off on the drive home and by the time I got into bed (45 minutes) it felt like someone had thrown sand into my eyes and followed it up with some pepper spray. The two valium they gave me helped me to get a 90 minute nap but that was it.

8 hours later I can finally see again. Things are still a bit hazy and focusing on things up close (like the computer screen) is difficult. I'm told that tomorrow morning will bring a dramatic improvement and I pray that it does as I'm not impressed so far.

Hopefully things will heal up and I'll be able to begin shooting like I was able to a few years ago. I recently had a couple of issues corrected on my rifle so I have high hopes for my skills once I'm back in the prone again.

Anyone else have similar problems when they had lasik?

Re: Had Lasik today

I had Lasik in 2008 and have better than 20/20 in both eyes. My old man had it the same year (different doc) with less than stellar results.

Things were a bit hazy for the first couple of days and it was about 18 months before my vision finally stabilized. Remeber that eye drops are your friend use them whenever you think about it, NOT when your eyes feel dry.

I noticed you said that reading things up close are still fuzzy, did you need reading spectacles before surgery ? If so, you will most likely still need them. Apparently that part of ones vision is not correctable.

Best of luck.

Re: Had Lasik today

Yeah I had the same experience. Couldn't see shit right afterwords, went home and tried to sleep but it felt like a sandstorm of pepper in my eyes. After a day or so you should be good to go.

The only think I notice now is that sometimes my eyes get really tired from trying to focus, and my pupils are a lot bigger than they were. I look like I'm tripping on shrooms or something, especially in low light. Other than that, it's all good.

Re: Had Lasik today

Things are a bit better this morning all the way around. I can tell that my distance vision is improved and reading up close is almost back to where it was. I've never needed reading glasses but they were more than clear that the lasik does nothing to prevent their eventual need.

Much improved today, looking forward to how things improve in the days to come.

Thanks for the feedback guys

Re: Had Lasik today

Had mine done in 2003, still happy with it, my eyes do get dry out here but no where near what my eyes did with contacts.

Use your drops like they say, the moisturizing ones, I am still 20/12.5 right eye and 20/15 left eye, it is amazing just amazing what a difference it is flying and downhill skiing... Riding motorcycles too, ever been on a track and started to lose a contact? Yeah that is a load of fun.

Re: Had Lasik today

I have thought about it over the years and read a lot about great results (as well as botch-ups), and the possibility of something going wrong and interfering with my "shooting" eye will always keep me wearing eyeglasses

Can you explain that? Is there a preference between the two? What if price is not really as much of a concern? Which one would you pick if you had to.

Re: Had Lasik today

I'll pass thanks LOL Something about cutting my eyes with lasers puts me off. Been wearing glasses for 25 years and used to them. Only 2 eyes and if someone fucks them up then I don't feel like being blind. You guys are braver than me.

Re: Had Lasik today

I had PRK done 9 months ago. It was the best thing ever! More expensive than LASIK-but they are NOT cutting into your eye-they are reshaping it. The healing is slower but the results seem to last longer. I went from 20/200 to 20/15. Wouldn't change it!I debated a long time but had it done before going downrange. Do it!

Re: Had Lasik today

Glad your eyesight got better man. A good friend of mine went in for Lasik because her younger sister did the same procedure a year before and had good results. Post-op she described her vision the same way you did in your initial post and the doctor told her to do the same thing. Unfortunately, her condition worsened and needed corrective surgery over the course of 3 months... She was pretty much blind for that time not being able to see with or without glasses. Eventually, they got it to the point where she was able to see again with no pain. Consider yourself lucky.

Re: Had Lasik today

Had mine done in '07, no regrets here. That pepper sand storm is a bitch!

I think I took about 4 aspirin and 4 advil then took my nap, about 4 hrs. Woke up with no pain and could see across the parking lot! I couldn't read the odometer in a vehicle without contacts or glasses, not even the clock on the radio. Went form a -6.0 to a 20/15 and 20/20. Immediately after surgery I could see the clock on the wall and read the time, couldn't believe it. I would definitely recommend it.

Re: Had Lasik today

did PRK in 09. I'd probably do lasik if I were to do it again.

went to a big clinic ie. lasikplus to do it. they have all the latest stuff and it's all they do. went smooth as glass.

recovery on prk kinda sucks.
