I was going to get a remington 5r with a nightforce 5.5x25x50, and jump into long range shooting with both feet( you know cry once, that sort of thing) but due to unforseen finacial setbacks, Im going to have to wade in a little slower.

I have settled for a 700 sps varmint and an egw 20 moa base, but now I need to find a new scope for around $600-$1200, comparable to the nightfoce in magnification range or less say 4x16x42 or whatever, and a good set of rings. The rings need to be included in the above price.

I was looking at the Bushnell Elite 6500 and its about the only thing that fits my specs. What other brands am I missing?

Thanks for the help,
raider
I maybe able to go up a little on the price of the scope to $1200, I am just need ing some suggestions for around that price.

Re: Had to come off the high horse

someone will say it, i may as well be first. super sniper deserves a look. there is a video review on this site of them. search fu should help, plus, look back in this forum. there was alot of good scope discussions lately. dont feel bad, at least you can still get equipment to shoot with, it may not be the stuff you wanted, but your still gonna have decent stuff. use swfa's sample list, they have good high quality used equipment in there, you may be able to get more than you thought.

Re: Had to come off the high horse

Nothing wrong with the SPS, I had a .308 one and at 100 yards it shot 3/8" groups. (That new trigger is sweet.) As for the glass, thats a tough price range. The ONLY thing I would buy would be a Zeiss Conquest. You will most likely have a better sight picture with a 10x Zeiss than a 15x Burris. They are not a fancy "tactical" scope with big knobs and all that. Hell, their not even 30mm tubes, just 1". But when you look through one you'll be very happy. Don't worry so much about high power, put your money into the glass, you'll see your target much better.

Re: Had to come off the high horse

Yeah it was a toss up between the sps and savage model 10fp, I still havent decided which I want. Still got a month before I get to pick it up.

I will look into the super sniper. Any thoughts on the Nikon Monarchs, I have been looking at them but at one time I thought they had a mildot scope and now I cannot seem to find it. I know alot of people like the Mark 4 line of scopes from Leupold, so what about the Mark 2's?

Thanks,
Raider

I found a millet on the sample list and have come across the name a quite a few time on the Hide, what about them are they worth considering?

Re: Had to come off the high horse

The hard part of that price range is in the combinations. The Conquest and the 6500,both have the glass and the magnification, but neither are offered with mil turrets. The S.S. on the other hand has pretty good glass, mil turrets, but know where near the magnification (3x9) that the O.P. desired! If it were my rifle I would prolly go with the S.S.,YMMV

I will very shortly have a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50 Tactical for sale. It has seen 92 shots, and is in like-new condition.

It is a very good scope and I wouldn't get rid of it if I didn't have a great opportunity on a Nightforce. The glass is clear, the turrets are fantastic.

PM me if you're interested.

Re: Had to come off the high horse

Once you get back on your feet financially keep the 5R in mind. It's a pretty sweet rifle.

We just listed one on gunbroker with the new SS10X42HD.

Mike McDonald was nice enough to break it in for us too!

Re: Had to come off the high horse

Seems to me like the prices jump when you go first focal plane and side-focus parallax adjustments.

If you're considering second focal plane, mil-dot, BUT with MOA turrets, the Vortex Viper 6-20 seems to have the most bang for the buck at about $500.00 or so. I've used one a bit and it's great in all the mechanical respects, repeatable, and the optical clarity is better than our 3,100 ASL low-humidity air here beyond 300 yards, even with no wind.

I was even tempted to use it on a different power setting to make the mil dots equal 4 MOA... I'm an old ART-MPC guy and have even toyed with the idea of zoom ranging for the spacings that are 1 mil at 20 power.

That said, there's a lot in favor of sticking with mil/mil or MOA/MOA. I've also made enough errors in forgetting the zoom setting on SFP scopes to now have a FFP model (Falcon Menace--and I've decided I want more than 14x at the top end).

Since you're in TX in the lowlands (to me at least), this being the winter season probably isn't a reason to wait for the Vortex FFP scopes to start shipping. Based on how their other scopes do the same thing as the older "big" names for HUNDREDS of fewer dollars spent, your desire to only "cry once" might be met by their upcoming models. If you can wrap your head and your math around MOA/MOA, that approach does offer a slight bit of finer precision in zeroing. Beyond 500 yards, it's nice to have clicks fine enough to be lost in your group dispersion.

We are accepting back orders for the new Vortex Viper PST scopes right now. Get in line, we won't charge you until it ships and you can cancel at any time.

Re: Had to come off the high horse

Check out Valdada IOR tactical scopes. Good glass and heavy duty, which has a nice Mp-8 retical. You can get this with a set of Valdada rings for $1100, $1300 for illuminated. Very close to Nightforce quality scope.
I have found the Trijicon Accupoints to be quite nice for that $700 dollar range.

Check these both out at

libertyoptics.com

talk to Scott good prices and great service

Re: Had to come off the high horse

if you do the math and crunch the numbers you could possibly afford the 5R with a SS 10x or even possibly a used leupold.

just something to think about

Re: Had to come off the high horse

Buy the SPS, upgrade the stock, shoot the piss out of it for a couple of years then have a 5r barrel installed and start over. I have an SPS tactical (.223) in a choate tactical stock with an egw base, burris xtr rings and a millet TRS-1. I really like the rig. Had I known about Falcon optics at the time, i probably would have gone with one of those. All told, i have about 1300 bucks in the rig including the Harris bipod and the pod-lock. It shoots very well, the .308's even seem to shoot better.
The Savage FP10 is also an excellent option and you can get one in an HS Precision stock for less than the SPS and stock upgrade. The Howa 1500 varmint rifle in a B&C light tactical stock has an excellent reputation, as does the Tikka varmint series.
You have options.

Re: Had to come off the high horse

Yeah ive been crunching the numbers and IF my math is good I might it end up with a 5r, I just might have to go dig out one of my old scopes to put on it, I think I have an old 3x9x40 nikon somewhere Im gonna use just so I can start shooting until I can get some good glass.

thanks
