I am looking for a 45 ACP pistol. This pistol will be for home protection only. I want a large frame pistol with a high capacity magazine. I prefer 13 round, but would consider a 10 round magazine. I would like the pistol to have adjustable sights. And I would like it to have a compensated barrel.

I have been looking at the SpringField, Glock, and S&W pistols. Their web sites are a bit ridiculous. They provide very little information. I would prefer to buy the most accurate of these pistols. What do you guys think about these pistols?? Any preferences?? Tom.

Hog,
Looking at the specs you want i would look at HK or glock. Now as for those 2 i like the external safety of the HK. Before anyone jumps my butt i own 4 glocks.
I would rethink the comp barrel and the adjustable sights. In a defense situation you gonna be up close and personel with them.
As for which is more accurate? Well, thats more up to you and how much you REALLY practice with it.
Just my .02

Re: Handgunn-Pistol-Questions

You do not want a compensated barrel, it will blast like a cannon.

My vote is for the M&P .45. Actually my vote is for a 9mm but you didn't give that option.

I love my 1911s but none of my non-1911 pistols are .45s. 9mm is just as effective, recoils less, I can carry more ammo, load it cheaper, etc. And if you look at the performance of 147 grain 9mm, you'd be hard pressed to find any differences in penetration between that and 165/180 grain .40 and 230 grain .45 with modern bullets. In other words, if you want a more powerful home defense weapon, consider keeping a shotgun next to your 9mm, instead of turning that 9mm into a .45.

But, if you just must have a .45, the XD, Glock, and M&P all are quality pistols. Accuracy does not matter; all of them will shoot way better than you will. My personal choice is the M&P because it is the most ergonomic and fits me best. You'd really be hard pressed to go wrong with any of them, though.

Re: Handgunn-Pistol-Questions

If it fits your hand, I'd vote for the Glock. Accurate, easy to shoot, and personally I feel it recoils less than my .40 cal Glocks. It's probably the recoil is different, more of a push than a snap.

My 21 has night sights and a slight grip reduction done by the previous owner which is a good thing since I don't have 'Mongo' hands.

Really just removed the finger grooves and a little bit of material from the back strap. It also changed the grip angle to where it's not as different from my 1911's or my 2011 as a std. Glock.

Nothing against a 1911 (I carry a Commander) but if you're not having to conceal it, IMO the 21 is great.

Re: Handgunn-Pistol-Questions

Best to head down to the gun store and handle a few. One of them will just feel better than the others. All of them are more accurate than all but the best shooters but the one that fits you the best will be the most accurate in your hand. If there is a range close by that rents guns you should take advantage of it.

Re: Handgunn-Pistol-Questions

+1 on the vote for M&P. A friend has one and I like the way it shoots and feels. Personally I love my p226 9mm. Whatever feels best in your hand.

Re: Handgunn-Pistol-Questions

The M&P does have the interchangeable back straps which are nice. I haven't shot the .45 but do own a Pro in 9mm. With the grip possibilities it works well for my wife and myself.

I did get some range time with a friend's XD .45. The grip safety could be a little wider IMO. Being so narrow I could feel it in the palm of my hand and it was a little distracting. It wouldn't be hard to grow accustomed to it but it did feel different.

Re: Handgun-Pistol-Questions

As do many others here, I own several .45's. I use the G 21 Short Frame (SF)for my home defense. It takes a 13 round mag (15 with the +2 floor plate) and has a rail with Laser / Light on it. If you go with an HK, which is a superior handgun, you will either need a proprietary light laser or an an accessory for the accessory rail to hang a light from it. In other words the HK has a proprietary accessory rail, which can make it costly to upgrade your pistol.

Your best bet is to handle and shoot as many .45 variants as possible. It is hard for us to tell you how our shoes will fit your feet.

And don't forget to train with it. No matter how expensive, they don't shoot themselves.

Ref. the compensated barrel, they are going to be louder and throw a flash straight up from the muzzle, causing you as many problems as your adversary. I say stay away from it.

As far as accuracy, that is all up to you and your front sight. Most folks cannot shoot to the potential of their well made handgun. I will say that THE most accurate .45 I own is my Sig P220.

My $.02, its worth what you paid for it.

Did I mention that you should train with whatever you buy?

Re: Handgunn-Pistol-Questions

GLOCK 21 all the way......Although not sure ya really need the adjustables (prefer things that dont have the ability to loosen bc just when you dont want them to they will). For what your intended use is a quality night sight would be your best option, just my opinion but of course up to you.
.
My 21 with heinie straight 8's sleeps close.

Re: Handgunn-Pistol-Questions

I am new here, as such I am only giving my .02. I have owned the Glock 21 and even after a grip reduction it still did not feel just right. I ended up selling it after getting my hands on the M&P. I have large size hands and put the small grip on,and for me is the best feeling polymer gun. I still own other Glocks but am lovin the M&P.Going to be attending Randy Cain's handgun course in April with it. Will know more then. Hope this helps.
