Handling trades on the classifieds?

I've been offered a few trades on something I have posted for sale and it got me curious as to how to handle a trade if I did want to go through with one. As in a buying situation, the buyer almost always sends the payment first and the seller waits to receive it/for it to clear before shipping out the goods. So it there any 'proper way' to handle a trade? Is it just up to whatever the parties agree on? Or is it the norm for one or the other to send the item first? Ship out both at the same time? Any info would be appreciated.

That's a Good question.

I just orchestrated a trade with a guy for different caliber Krieger barrels. Sent a couple pm's, talked on the phone for 5 minutes, decided we'd both ship them Monday. It was painless, and I have no concerns whatsoever.

If I was trying to make a trade with someone who had to have my goods first, emmmm, I would have to want their stuff pretty bad to make up for the lack of respect on their part.

Normally when I do a trade, I will ask that the buyer or wanter of my stuff sends the item to me first just like I would do for a payment for an item.

+1 on this. Ship at the same time and send each other the tracking numbers to make sure both items have been sent.

this is what I do as well. Unless I have done business with the person in the past and feel I know them well.

If it's a name I see often on here or a long standing member I just send my item....I do the same with for sale items. I am a lot more careful with unknowns and would handle it through the USPS, saving my correspondance. The post office is a good resource for action if fraud occurs.

I might have jumped the gun on my reply, in my experience we were tading equal value items neither of us needed.

I guess if I were selling a full house custom rifle, and someone wanted to trade two guns and some coin, I would want his stuff first, Gunbroker style.

I guess I'm apprehensive about the member's here who think number of posts equal credibility.

If someone is selling something at a 5% to 10% discount from new, I will buy new , why chance it.

Whether your buying, selling, or trading it is all 100% based on the honor system. Work out the details via PM's where it suits both parties and proceed.
