Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

The Hornady unit looks like a rebranded Harbor Freight unit (which is what I use). I've been using an Ultrasonic unit for couple of years now and like it, others don't care for it. Do a search there are several recipes for sonic cleaning floating around. There is also an article at 6mmbr

What CGM said if you want a ultra sonic cleaner. I have often thought of getting one myself.

However, although not as pretty, my old fashioned tumbled in lizard litter brass still goes bang every time.

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

I read the ultrasonic brass cleaner article at 6mmBR and got a ultrasonic cleaner from ebay, a jug of vinegar, some Lemi-shine, and some baking soda.

Ultrasound does get the inside of the necks clean, but only with enough effort, it would be easier to just buy new brass.
The transducer in the center of the bottom of the tank needs to be pointed right at the neck, and get different angles up the neck. I have made different fixtures to try to hold the brass cases at the right spot in the tank.
This takes up a lot of bathroom counter space.

The Hornady cleaner is the same cleaner that has been around for a while, with the Hornady name printed on it.

Curious if anyone can post details on the Harbor Freight version. I'm heading to the Harbor Freight in a bit and some details would help me find it. Color, price... anything. Thanks!

Thanks for the link. Is it worth buying or should I stick with a regular tumbler in your opinion?

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

Never heard of the stainless media trick. Where do you buy it? My main goal was to have the media clean the primer pockets so i wouldnt have to uniform/clean them every time.

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

One of my other hobbies is Watchmaking. Subsequent to servicing a mechanical watch is it completely disassembled and ultrsonically cleaned.

I have a commercial cleaner and it is very effective. But it wasn't cheap (around 490 dollars). It does however do a VERY good job.

JB1000 a member here did a very extensive experiment with a unit as well as a variety of solvents. CLICK HERE: for Jason's experiment

My only caveat is WHAT you use to clean. There is no doubt that ultrasonic cleaners clean your case INTERIORS. Better than stainless media in a tumbling wet solution? I don't know.

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

I tried ultrasonic. It worked but it just isn't for me. However, someone.... I think Scott Cousino.... mentioned Simple Green in one for gun parts. I tried that with a bolt carrier group that was just filthy from my suppressor and it worked frigging great. So. I'm keeping it around.

Plus my garage doesn't reek of vinegar. Simple Green smell now. The wife thinks it still stinks but I think they should make Simple Green and burnt gun powder scented perfume.

Smokin, read this thread http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1153883#Post1153883 regarding the SS media and decide if you think SS media is for you. PM Susaponte here on the Hide and he will give you the seller's contact info. I can personally say it works great and once you get a process set up it is not too difficult separate the media. I had been considering ultrasonic, but after using SS media I am no longer interested.

Would that work on a sealed .22 can? Kroil don't do shit for me except make me use asprin.

probably, I have a sealed 5.56 can I can throw in there and try. The best way to clean with kroil (in my experience) is to get one of those big ass shot glasses you see in souvenir stores. Like the Texas shot glasses I have seen. Full that with kroil and let the can stand on end and all the crap settles at the bottom of the glass.

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

Again, some people like it, others don't. Personally, I am limited on space so the Ultrasonic cleaner foots the bill a little better than a tumbler for me. I also have an air compressor so I can blow excess water from brass (this is an area where some people have a problem with the ultra sonic, but when I used to use my friend's tumbler I had more of a problem getting the media out).
The newer Harbor Freight unit has a water heater, mine doesn't, so it should clean even better than mine.

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

I might have to look into this method...

I WANT to go the SS Media route, however living outside of the US means that buying a tumbler and SS media gets expensive.

This hornady cleaner works out to about 1/4 of the price for me.

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

I just picked up the hornady ultra sonic cleaner from midway $99. I had a few coupons so it was 75ish w/ shipping. I' using the method described @ 6mmbr http://www.6mmbr.com/ultrasonic.html. So far I like it however its only for my match brass. I'm going to use it for other small parts as well as watches and rings. I'm happy.

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

Harbor freight cleaners that are relabelled.

The guys that like seriously clean brass are moving to the Stainless tumbling method.

Im waiting on my SS setup to arrive, but currently have the US cleaner going until that arrives.

If the budget is super tight then yes it will suffice. If you have $200 to spend, then the SS method cannot be beaten.

Re: Has anyone seen the new Hornady Sonic Cleaner?

You'll like the Stainless Steel media. I tried ultrasonic for two loads of brass and it was more work than the Stainless steel media. I can clean more brass at one time with the stainless than with ultrasonic and it takes less attention.
