Does anyone know what the legitimate shippers have to pay for hazmat? I've seen it everywhere between $.01 to $30 per shipment. I realize there are training and licensing cost, but I'm wondering about the actual per shipment costs. I can't believe it costs Powder Valley $20 every time they ship a box.

Everything I see online states $19.95 for UPS.

FWIW I've been using a few different shops to ship primers and powder for me both here in MT and at the house in IL and the cost has averaged around $20 to ship 2lbs of powder with a couple charging almost $25 for the same amount. I was able to see the UPS invoice cost for shipping 12lbs of powder through my friend's gun shop and it was $29.xx. He charged me $40 but he also had to supply the heavy duty hazmat/explosives box to ship the powder.

From my experience the hazmat charge seems fluid rather than fixed. I received an 8# canister of powder from Midway l ordered last week and the charge was $12.99, shipping was $14.40 (UPS delivered this past Tuesday). March of last year I ordered in 10# and the hazmat was $11.99.

I wouldn't surprise me if the larger retailers were cut a break on the price that they can choose to pass on to us if they want to.

I work logistics and have the pleasure of working with carriers on this sort of stuff. It's absolutely variable. The companies essentially go to UPS and/or Fedex, explain how much volume they'll be doing, and the UPS/Fedex rep goes to their pricing department and tries to plead their case to get rates as low as possible for their customer. The big boys have more business to flaunt, therefore, get better rates.

Hazmat charges won't be quite as fluctuating as regular pricing on standard shipping just due to the extra training, handling, etc., but it is still variable to some degree.

What I do, and I'm sure these companies do, is essentially get UPS and Fedex in a bidding war for their business, which will drive down costs.

All these threads about the costs of running other people's businesses make me laugh.

What is even the point? Nobody here has the buying power to move the needle, and these days you buy what you need from whoever has it.

The cost to the shipper is most likely not based "per package", but a fee they pay monthly, quarterly, etc. I'm guessing there's a contract for a certain time frame and a one time fee they pay for the length of that contract. Just a guess. Seems like that information is hard to come by. Good question.

yea fuck powder valley for charging a little extra for a value added service. They shouldn’t make any extra on a service that they perform. Really when buying products we should see transparent costs of everything before we order to make sure they aren’t making too much off of us.

wait until you guys realize that sometimes you don’t have enough time to buy multiple powders to max the hazmat and nobody will let you call and combine orders.

I can’t wait to see the bitching threads.

if you want any H Extreme powder you’re lucky if you can buy some at all I’ve put in 2-3 different powder orders on the same drops sometimes and have to eat 3x redundant shipping/hazmat charges.

Those assholes should charge us $300 per jug but give us free hazmat!!1!

You want an lol check out Bruno’s latest email. Shipping + hazmat is $50 on top of $40-50/lb powder.

All good points. I was just curious what the carriers charged shippers for hazmat since there is a wide range of costs to the buyer.
Powder Valley claims $19.95 is exactly what they get charged by both FedEx and UPS, and I have no reason not to believe them. If you look at Grafs they claim they split it with you, you pay 10 they pay 10. I agree with these other posts that it probably can be negotiated by different companies, but I would guess for the most part the shippers are charging them right at $20 per hazmat shipment. It is what it is, but even with the hazmat fee added on, unless you're buying a tiny amount, you're way better off using powder valley than any of the big box sporting goods stores.

All the major carriers charge a flat fee per package for hazmat. Each company shipping these goods is required to be DOT certified to ship hazmat items. For example I managed the supply chain for a company that shipped pressurized vessels. We could only ship the specific UN designations we were certified for but nothing else. The fee is auto applied when you designate the type of goods being shipped. Companies that ship a lot of packages integrate directly with UPS so this process is automated. How or if the shipper passes that fee to the consumer is at their discretion.
