I have a co-worker and friend that does a lot of urban deer / coyote culling. Especially at some airfields. He also holds a sniper billet.
As such, he is doing this kind of work all year. Not just in hunting season. One major concern they always have is a wounded animal running into traffic. (Car / aircraft) The other major concern is a wounded animal running into someone's property. The truth is, the customer wants the deer managed, but they don't want to know or see how it's done.
So.. he has been known on occasion to take head-shots on animals. He always uses a suppressed rifle and usually even a wild-cat round.
Since all antlers have to be sawn-off and turned into the Game Warden, trophy quality is not of concern. The meat is given to a certain processor that gives it to the local homeless shelter.
I will say I was a little surprised by some of the Afrcian plans game taken with head-shots in this thread. But I would have to guess that perhaps it's management as well. I know that if I ever get a chance to hunt Africa (I will), I would not want to damage a trophy I'm paying full freight on.
But…as someone who has seen both sides of the process, I am not so quick to judge on facts I might not have.
Note: I have casually asked about getting in on his side-duty, and the answer is always,"We'll get back to you".
Haha!
