Need some help here, I am in need of a headlamp for hunting, camping ect. Would prefer AA batteries but am open to suggestions. Looking for a bright, long lasting light, something middle of the road(no junk lights) any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: headlamps

I use a Petzl Tactikka XP. Weatherproof (O-ring sealed), lightweight, long run time, 3 levels, and haven't broken it yet (which is pretty good for me...) It has two other "levels" (an extra bright momentary mode and a flashing mode (never used). It comes with 4 slide-across lenses - red, blue, green, and a white beam spreader.

Unfortunately, it also has a side-facing battery indicator (flashing LED), so it gets a piece of tape over that. Although that may be more peace of mind for me -- the side spill and reflection from a headlamp (any headlamp) is probably more than that tiny LED...

Re: headlamps

Make sure whatever you can has plenty of adjustments. Hunting partner had a lamp over 100 lumens and it was killing me on the trail, it was overpowering my lamp and my silhouette was making shadows on the trail. Also way annoying whenever he looked at me to talk, it was like a surefire in your face from 3 feet away.

Re: headlamps

I use and really like the Petzl Myo XP. It was much cheaper as I got it on sale when REI first started carrying the product. I use it all summer setting handlines in the early morning or late evening. Out in a hay field there is plenty of light to line-up the lines or on low plenty of light to travel. Mine has a strap over the top but looking in the description it looks like it comes with the top strap but it is not shown.

This is good info. Sucks to work/hunt/talk with somebody running a bright headlamp. Get one that is bright, but has lower settings or is dimmable like the Surefire stuff. My Saint works great.

Re: headlamps

The Myop XP has three level settings, uses AA batteries, can flip-up a diffuser, and the light adjusts up and down. I also hhave an older Petzl Duo but like the Myo XP much better as it is alot lighter and compact.

The Saint does use AA's as well as 123 lithium's. You can use either or.

I stand corrected, thanks!

Re: headlamps

I know that all the ones listed above are much better quality lights but for shits, give the Energizer head lamp a crack for $14. I've had mine for 10 years and its still going strong. I use it at work in remodeling and construction all the time and hunting and working on cars at night to. Just a thought.

Re: headlamps

I always buy from the Petzl line. They have many to choose from to suit your needs, and they have lasted me for a long time through harsh conditions.

Re: headlamps

I always use the cheap energizer headlamps. Works great and long lasting battery. Cheap enough to buy a spare to throw in the pack. With that said my next headlamp is definitely going to be the Surefire Saint.

Re: headlamps

+1 for Petzl TacTikka. Used mine for 6 months on the Appalachian Trail with ZERO problems (just changed the batteries about once a month, and that was using it every night). The flip down red lens is great for reading, as well as all the different brightness settings.

Re: headlamps

Surefire Saint or Princeton Tec EOS II. The Saint is just awesome in form, fit, and function (warning: I'm an SF fanboy) and the EOS is compact, cheap, and they've been installing warm tinted LEDs which is much more favorable over the angry blue or purple tints most of the cheaper brands use. Stay away from 5mm LED headlamps.

Re: headlamps

Pretty much any of the Petzl.

Ive had my Petzl Tikka Plus for over 10 years. Mine is so old that my Tikka Plus is now called just the regular Tikka (aka 4 LED lamp with 3 lighting modes).

My Saint will run on AA's as well as 123's.

Sorry, I missed Chucky's post first time around.
