Helicopter takes out radio tower in Houston

A local news report said the tower had a history of the lights not working and that the very few lights in the video would not have been visible with the city lights in the background.

How the fuck could you be that stupid? That almost looks like suicide just because how square he hits between the bright ass lights.

And who the fuck would pay to look at shitty Houston?

Supposedly there was a NOTAM filed with the FAA. If so, it’s completely on the pilot.
RIP to all of them.

What NOTAMS? I just checked the NOTAMS for KEFD and there was no mention of an unlit tower. How far from the airport was the tower? I’m not sure.

It’s been my professional experience that the NOTAM system sucks. It’s crammed full of nonessential junk and stuff that’s important like this is often buried in the verbiage never to be seen. The NOTAMS listed on the ATIS are typically important, but that list is normally about 5% or less of the listed NOTAMS.

This information was likely listed/buried in some route NOTAM or local area NOTAM that’s 5-10 pages long. The pilot should have checked them, but I could see that detail being easily missed.

And for the record, NOTAM will always stand for Notices to Airmen, not the woke version Notices to Air Missions!

RIP

The lights appeared to be working in the vid.

Yeah, there appears to be one at the top working, and one or two others, but there’s supposed to be a whole array of lights up and down it some which are strobes, which are not working. That top light was 300’ above the helicopter’s altitude when it hit the tower. With all the background lighting, I can see how it was not seen.

Also, the NTSB report NoDopes above give more information. Apparently she was talking with ATC when it happened and trying to locate traffic they call out to her right.

With all the gps data we have these days I don’t know why you couldn’t have, or they apparently didn’t have, a moving map with all the obstacles.

Tragic.
