Hello SNIPER'S HIDE member's. I am new to the site and directed here by Tony from impact data book's. Just wanting to say hello and I can't wait to learn. Just in case you care about my personal info. I am a post active duty 8404 Hospital Corpsman during the Gulf War. I now run some private health clubs and am married with children and poor! ha ha . I have good exp. in hunting and gunning but not precision shooting long distance. Well I guess you have to be some what precise for hunting but there is plenty I have and want to learn. I also have a good battery of weapon's but none of the calibur of GA PRECISION. If anyone has some direction for me in what kind of starting rig I should pursue please feel free to chime in. I have thought about just getting a remington 700p 5r milspec. I also have a line on a remington 700 target tactical for $1300 but am hesitant due to the triangle barrell. I can possible get $2500 together for a used rig but what I have always wanted is a milspec m24 from GA or a USMC m40a1 Thank's for the direction Tony and I hope to get a nice weapon and some great schooling soon.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

WELCOME to The Hide.

This is a great place to hangout. A lot of knowledge here.
Just a few tips to keep you in good standing.

1-If you have questions, use the SEARCH function. Chances are what your wanting to know has been asked before and then asked 7,893 more times.

2-Don't hi-jack threads.

3-Don't be a troll.

4-Must love GUNS!

That last ones a gimme. Again, welcome and this website can be addicting. Also, a 5R is a very good starting place in my book. Check out the new SPS700-AAC SD. Its another very good rifle for the money.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Thank's gentleman, what is hi-jacking threads and being a troll?
I did look at the aac but I keep getting pushed away from rifles that have the hogue overmold stock. I don't know why

A TROLL is one of those people who comes into websites just to cause problems and may post false or offensive information.

Hi-jacking is where someone has made a thread in regards to a question they have and someone else comes in and ask's another question that does not have anything to do with the original OP's question.

You seem like a cool cat so you should be fine. I have heard some good stuff about the AAC model. I don't care for the stock either but you could sell it and buy a Manners,AICS, or Mcmillan and be GTG.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Welcome and enjoy your stay.

To get you started I will break up what I believe to be a good remington build, and it should get you started for not too much and has lots of possibilities for the future.

Stage 1)
- Buy a remington of your choice. SPS Tac, SPS Varmint, Police, Police LTR are all good starting platforms. Chose the SPS if you intend on changing the stock over eventually. Chose the Police models if you think the HS is good enough a stock to fill your needs. Of course there are others but those are the popular and smart choices for "tactical" rigs.
- Drop a Timney trigger in to replace the X-mark pro
- Add a scope and a base of your choice

Stage 2)
- Have the action trued, and the bolt handle permanently fixed to the bolt
- Tactical bolt knob if you like the look of it
- Get a smith to pay some attention to the recoil lug
- Buy an Atlas bipod if you want to shoot in the field

Stage 3)
- Change the stock over to the one of your liking

A build like that could get you started easily, and over time you could build it up to something you desire.

That is of course one way of doing it, but theres always more than one way to skin a cat.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Thank's guy's for all the input so far. My wife actually went today and bought me a new remington 700 sps tactical and mounted a leupold long range vxiii 4.5x14x40 with varmint reticle. Can you say holy shit! on this forum? I am fricken stoked. Now I am wondering should I break in the barrell or just shoot it, or what?

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Go and shoot... Break in is Hype... clean the barrel with a snake when your patterns start to loosen. You should look at getting a subscription to the pay area of the hide... goes over all of this and alot of good information on shooting.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Welcome to the Hide. You have chosen the best place to get all the info you want and need about precision rifles, and all things related. A lot of great people on this site with endless amounts of experience on the subject that love to share it. Go and shoot that new rifle, a lot, and good luck.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Welcome to the hide ,+1 on the online training it is worth the money

For the brake in just clean the barrel to get anything out of the barrel that may of been left from the factory and go shoot it , clean when you notice accuracy drop off

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Welcome. I would suggest a 5r over the other remmy just havent heard good things about the triangular barrel. The 5r is a proven performer. GA is a good smithing service. Stay open minded about whom you choose to have build you a rifle, there is a multitude of competent smith's here. I am in favor of supporting the starting out smith's as you usually get very good CS and also establish a good relationship(hopefully) and can be a return customer for many builds to come. I also prefer a smaller shop as I appreciate being able to easily contact the man who owns and is building my rifle. My preference is Mark Gordon with Short Action Customs. Have heard Suarez is good(STR here on the hide) amongst many others. GAP has a long record of reliability and quality work. Find a smith you like and stick with em. Read around here and you'll find all you need and then some.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Welcome! I have read a lot of great things about the 5r. I just recently purchased a remington 700 sps varmint (heavy barrel). Remington is offering a rebate on them right now. Just throwing that out there for your benefit. I figue with the money saved I can purchase a new stock and a trigger and be around the same price as the 5r base. It all comes down to personal preference. Good luck with your purchase. If you want a full review of the 5r look at this http://www.tobystactical.com/2007/11/remington-700-ss-5r-milspec.html Once again, Welcome.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

ok finally shot the weapon. loved every shot. i have a lot of work to do in the accuracy dept. i will be posting pic's of the targets. is it a bad idea to start learning with cheap ammo? i have purchased federal match 168, hornady match 168 and hornady match 178. but to get the shoting basics down i purchased cheap ammo. does cheap ammo harm the weapon? a number of people have said they would never shoot cheap ammo in thier weapon.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Welcome, and thank you for your service, Doc.

Hunting and gunning are a good preface for precision shooting; but to do the job right, greater attention needs to be paid to marksmanship basics. Do some searching here on 'marksmanship basics' and the info will be plentiful.

Most of us have a strong preference for the .22LR as a primary training tool. They are inexpensive, generically accurate, essentially immortal, and don't need such great distances to find the accuracy and wind, etc. challenges. Simpler is better, as long as it's in good working shape and reliable. For training, consistency outweighs raw accuracy. Don't go tail-spinning looking for the perfect trainer. A simple bolt repeater (I like the Savage MKIIF) is plenty adequate. Find a few brands of ammo it will digest comfortably (start your choosing at the cheaper end of the scale, cost and accuracy are about the gun's preferences, period; price is not the issue.), and shoot a ton.

If you want to know, ask. Anybody gets to wisecracking, ignore 'em.

Greg

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Welcome!
trust me get a .22lr for a trainer, it will do nothing but help you become a better shot
its cheep and fun, its worth ever Pennie

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Now that's what I'm looking for, and can I say thank you all for the knowledge. I have a 22 in Ar platform, and a old Winchester pump but can purchase a bolt if need be? I do have a marlin bull fluted barrel 17 hmr will that suffice?
Should I get trigger the same as I would on my 308 or leave it be? Thanks again.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

It will suffice. Its longer reach and ammunition cost are less of a positive, but they will still do the job.

As a marksmanship comparison, ten rounds of .22LR completely covered by a quarter (1" diameter) at 50ft meets the BSA Rifle Shooting Merit Badge requirement. Doing it at 50yd equals just under 2MOA, and that's decently competitive accuracy in most circles.

A well tuned BR target .22LR should do 1MOA or better at 50yd off rests.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Welcome! Before joining this site I'd shot for over 20 years, thinking I knew a lot about shooting. Well.... between SnipersHide and 6mmbr (AccurateShooter) sites my knowledge has increased exponentially. Just a lot of very knowledgeable people here such as George Gardner, Jered Joplin, Terry Cross, William Roscoe, Kasey (Accushot), etc., etc. It's a meeting place of the best of the best. You'll learn a lot.

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

The web has great resources and this is one of the best. The various stickies on each forum have tons of info of value to any shooter. One of the biggest plusses here is that you have posters who have tried virtually every rifle, scope, stock, caliber combination in existence. You obviously make good choices. Look at your decision when you picked a wife!

Re: hello everyone, new guy here!

Can I just say again, I love this site. I have laughed, learned, and cried. Lowlight is a funny s.o.b. to the point, even on his video's. I can search this site all day and learn, but the best is learning how to condone myself from other idiot's mistakes. Not saying I won't make any, but damn there are some funny and totally uneeded questions on here, but the responses from the old school guy's are the best. That video animation to the badd ass glass question is some funny shit.

First, welcom to the hide. You will find a lot of great guys and gals on here, with sooo much info it is stupid. I have learned so much here.

Back to your rifle, shoot the heck out of it. You will then have a good action to base your custom build off of.

I bought a 700 sps 308, but I scrapped the barrel and it took off from there.
You will have many options for a great build.

What calaber are you looking to get?

Again, welcome and get ready to get addicted.
