Hey everyone,

Been a long time browser of Sniper's Hide, but could never really justify getting a long range setup. I got into reloading last year and now I have all the pieces in place to take the plunge, it's a perfect storm of "why not?".

I work on MCB Quantico, and have applied to join their shooting club which reportedly shoot around once a month at the 1,000 yard range here. I also think I have the budget this year to pick up an AI AT (once I sell some stuff), although it's just a matter of when those things FINALLY get stateside (I hear end of the month but who knows). I know this is high end for a beginner, but I may never have this much $ in the budget again, and it will let me change out to a Rem 260 later on. The most sickening part of everything is deciding on glass, I'm stuck between an FFP in the Weaver Tactical line, the SWFA SS tactical, and the Vortex PST 6-24. There's even more options in consideration than that... but the only way to decide is to get my hands on them and as a beginner, they will all probably meet my needs.

A little about me. The only place I currently shoot around here is the Izaak Walton League of Fredericksburg, so I have access to a 100yd range and a few pistol ranges. I'm a certified Glock, Mossberg 500/590, Colt AR15/variant, Sig "P" series pistols, and HK MP5/burst trigger group armorer. I'm currently looking to get into some IDPA but haven't been able to settle down and commit. I hope to meet up with some members at some point and get some trigger time. I'd really love to learn from someone as I'm putting it into practice. Look forward to learning more and hopefully one day contributing.

Welcome! I too am a member of the Izaak Walton League (Leesburg, VA) and was stationed at Quantico for a stint myself. Two other options for 100+ yard shooting are the Fairfax Rod and Gun Club which occasionally hosts public matches (although its only 300yds) as well as Peacemake National Training Center in West Virginia. That range is GREAT and hosts a plethora of long range events and matches, as well as has the facility to get out to 1000+ yds. They are about an hour from myself so just under two from Fredricksburg more than likely.

Welcome,
I pretty local to you. If you need anything just let me know

Glad to see another Virginia Member. I'm in Richmond, so I'm not too far from you guys either.

A quick note about your plans to purchase an AI... If that's what you really want, sure go for it, but you could still build a very nice rifle for a quite a bit less. You also don't necessarily have to do it all at once. I started with a $450 Rem 700 SPS Varmint a few years ago. As time went on, I added a Jewell Trigger, Tubb Firing Pin, Chassis system, had the action trued and rebarreled with muzzle brake and bolt knob. I've got about $3600 in my rifle and it shoots tiny clover leafs (1/2" or less) at 100 yards if I do my part. The money saved would be much better spent on quality optics (experiences with Vortex seem to be mixed, but most everyone loves their SWFA's). I just yesterday ordered a Bushnell 3.5-21x50 ERS with G2 reticle after shooting a similar, but older Bushnell HDMR at Bang Steel this past weekend.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way trying to tell you how to spend your money, just merely pointing out my opinion. In the end, it's up to what you want, and are willing to pay for.
