Hello everyone, another Texan joining the boards.

Looking to break into a new hobby of precision shooting and see where it takes me. Looking forward to combing through the threads and learning the sport.

Thank you all in advance for the past years of info and all the new help from members going forth.

Looking to start with a Ruger Precision 6.5 Creedmoor with a Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25 x50 FFP. I have about 2 months before I decide for sure, so looking forward to heading over to the Bolt-Action section now.

Thanks

Hi TXbruiser, TX Yankee here, just joined the other day. Live in the Hill Country.

Hello @TexasYankee, im in the DFW area. I just moved up recently from Houston and am already finding a lot more 300+ yard ranges up in this area than Houston.

The lack of long ranges in Houston is partly why I never dove into this hobby earlier.

One of and if not THE premier long range instructor in the country lives in your area. Unfortunately I don't believe he's open to public. Do some asking around and see who's name is repeatedly mentioned for instruction. This is down to the fine science of the art. Getting into it is quite the addiction. I already have enough additions. Shooting distance, ugh more expensive than sporting clays!

Welcome! I’m up in Wichita Falls. If you ever travel this way I can get all kinds of precision stuff together for you and let you look at it. There is several good ranges in your area and also some good PRS style matches.

Wow, that would be awesome @Kadams1563. Not a bad drive from DFW. Ill be in touch when I get some free time (new born at home, and I work on offshore). Hence why im looking to get into this sport as a way to blow of steam and have something to be dedicated to to learn and get better at.

I did see all the monthly matches that happen at different ranges and I plan to visit a few to talk to the shooters. Ive got the bug bad, i have spent the last few days just learning about scopes and cleaning.... which from what im reading, less cleaning is almost better.

Hi,

And do tell...Who would that be?

Sincerely,

Do any of the local DFW guys have a gun shop they recommend with good prices on these RPR's? I have never purchased off one of the online stores like gunbroker or budsguns, is that the way to go with these higher priced guns?

I just question if New in Box for $200+ less than local shops is legit?

Welcome to the hide, im in North Texas also, have you bought your new rifle yet ? Im in Allen , p.m. me if you would like to try some rifles out. I belong to a club and it's agood place to practice.

Doesn't matter. He's dead. And somebody still got the shovel.

Howdy and welcome, Bruiser.

I'm in the DFW area as well. I belong to a gun club down in Terrell, and there are several other good ranges around. I know B-Tactical in Caddo Mills (east of DFW) goes to 400yds, and Triple C in Cresson (west of DFW) has 1000yd and 2000yd ranges. I'm still learning precision rifle shooting myself, and I don't make it to the range nearly as much as I'd like to, but I'd be happy to meet up with you (or anyone in the area) if you're looking for a range day partner.

As far as gun shops / purchases in the area, I bought my bolt gun from RFI Firearms in Wylie thru Gun Genie / Gallery of Guns. RFI had the best deal, and I had no problems with any part of the transaction.

I haven't had any gunsmithing work done, but I've bought parts from B&S Guns in Garland. The staff there is great. I went there looking for a hard to find QD mount. They didn't carry it normally but offered to order it for me. The gunsmith there overheard the conversation, knew exactly what I was looking for, happened to have one in a loose parts bin on his work bench, and sold it to me for a fraction of what the order would have cost. I know that doesn't have anything to do with his skills as a gunsmith, but it speaks to the level of customer care and service I received.

@Scott_RAP thanks for the warm welcome.
Since I'm not looking for a gunsmith at this time, but I'm always looking for good customer service I appreciate your story about B&S Guns, I'll be sure to swing in there next time im nearby.
I appreciate the range day invite too, I'm looking forward to it.
Im not available until after the new year, but I'll be sure to reach out to you when it becomes 2019.
I've been interested in Triple C, not too far from me and while I wont be pushing the limits there at first, I like the idea that I can grow from 300-2000 yards there. I'm planning on doing a tour there come january.
Thanks for your incite!!!!

I've recently moved to DFW from Houston and I am shocked at all the ranges here. There's more ranges within 30-45min of me than there is in all the Houston swath.
It's really incredible. I'm really looking forward to driving to a few and checking them out, along with going to spectator at a few monthly shooting matches I see on the clubs calendars.

That's great to hear. Since this will be all new to me, both the gun and long distance precision shooting, I was hoping that I can truly learn the fundamentals without out shooting the gun anytime soon.... if ever.

You can try GT Distributors (gtdist.com) as well. I got my gen ii rpr there cheaper than anyone else I foung in the area. They do alot of LE stuff so they also have good deals on Officer trade in rifles and glocks and such too.

I will see what I can do about testing out some guns, hopefully after the holidays I'll be meeting up with some members that have already invited me to the range.

With that said, based on what I'm seeing for prices, the rpr with a good scope is a comfortable expense for me.

Luckily I have time on my side, so we will see how many rifles I can shoot before my excitement gets the better of me and I run out and purchase.
