Help Choosing a Starter 300wm

Hello All,

Long time lurker, new time poster here. I am hoping that you will be able to help me choose a great starter 300 winchester magnum rifle. I have some basic experience with the 308 (Remy 700 sps tac aac-sd) and am looking to add a rifle with a little more "umph" as I have access to a very long range. Anyways, some of my criteria would be as follows:
- This rifle will become my workhorse / shtf (i know, i know...) rifle
- I have no company allegiance
- Must have aftermarket stocks / chassis systems availible for upgrade
- Will be built with the intent of night vision attachments (nighttime hog hunts)
- Threaded barrel is a huge plus
- "look" tactical
- Not weigh > 15 lbs (I would love if I could actually carry this gun around through the woods)

Are there any stock rifles that are not solely intended for hunting? I do NOT want a wood stock and am not into the look of hunter rifles. This gun will be primarily used as a bench shooting gun, but it would be very nice to be able to be carried around.

I should add I have never shot a 300wm, and am a little concerned about recoil. I have shot a 7mm rem mag, and handled it well, but I definitely felt the recoil. That was a very light hunting rifle however. I guess I am wondering if with a muzzle break the recoil could be tamed significantly

How much experience with the .308. How far are you shooting on a consistent basis...accurately? How many times per week are you shooting? The .308 is a far more practical training tool to use regularly in becoming a better marksman. With purpose based practice/training, you will do yourself more good and develop and then hone the fundamentals. Until your fundamentals are rock solid, the .300 could potentially cause more harm than good. Sure with a good .300 you get a potentially more capable rifle with increased velocity and power. What comes with that is the corresponding increase in muzzle blast a felt recoil.

Recoil is significantly greater in a .300 compared to a 7 Rem Mag. In a 15 lb rifle chambered in .300 Win Mag recoil will knock you off target with each shot. That is, without first developing fundamental marksmanship skills.

First, take that .308 and shoot the barrel out of it. Take some basic and then advanced practical shooting courses. Learn everything about .308 ballistics and apply the knowledge. Get proficient with the .308 out to 1200 meters. Once you e done that, then go get yourself a .300 so you can truly appreciate its capabilities.

ok the 300wm's recoil is nothing with a brake on it, but what's the budget here. If on a budget I'd start with a 700 action, and if you want to shoot heavies or not, we need a little more info. But basically I can say is you want a rem 700 style inlet action.

That was my first WinMag and I loved it. Ammo got a bit pricey, but it's an awesome rifle.
I ended up putting it in a Manners T4-A stock with the mini chassis so it took 5 rd AI mags.

For the money you can't really go wrong.

For the money you can't really go wrong.

Yup, this is what I'd tell you as well. I think this gives you a good mix of quality, accuracy, available customizations, and value. I love my 300WMs.

Comparable in what regard? The 5r has different riffling and a SS action and threaded barrel. I own both a 700p and 5r, and the 5r operates a little smother. I am told that is part do to some glass beading done to the SS action that is not performed on 700p. They both shoot great, but I do think you get what you pay for-- and the 5r is worth the extra dough, IMO.

Yeah, I know, I own both. I would not let the trigger weigh on the decision-- both give a forgettable performance.

5r rifling is debatable if better than standard rifling?
SS action means nothing except it is silver instead of black.
Both are entry level rifles.
$300.00 difference in price.
If budget is not a concern with the OP just get a custom rifle and be done.

Will I be able to paint over the stainless steel barrel? I have to be honest when I say that thing looks ug-ly!

Thank you for the advice everyone. It seems that I will be heading towards a Remington 700 5R. hopefully I can attach a nightvision device to those manners stocks...

That's what I did. Armor Black Cerakote over the barrel, action, and bolt.

Thanks man. I have since sold it, but I could ask my buddy that bought it to weigh it. The Manners stock had what the call "sniper fill" which adds some weight to it. It was fairly heavy, but not so heavy that it would be impractical to get out of town with. The recoil without the brake is manageable, but not fun. With the break it's more like a .243. Not bad at all. The brake I had was a PWS and it was pretty affordable and very effective. If I had my druthers I would have gone with a Surefire or FTE brake, but the PWS did the job. The only downside of the brake is it makes the rifle loud as fuck and it kicks up some pretty good dust in the prone position, but it's a decent trade off.

How many round would you be able to put downrange in a typical session with/without the brake? I am sorry its just I would like to know as much as I can about this caliber. I have shot a saiga 12 ga shotgun (unconverted and converted). The unconverted saiga had a plastic stock and it kicked like a mule with 00 buckshot. It was so unpleasant most of my friends didnt want to shoot it. I was able to tolerate this recoil - I am imaginng the brake-less 300 win mag is similar to that sagia.

To be honest I shot it once without the brake, I would imagine I could shoot all day, but I'd be sore the next day. By "not fun" I mean its way better with a brake. The weight of the stock really helps with recoil management along with a good bipod and shooting position. The HS Precision stock it comes with has a decent recoil pad on it and the Manners stock really sucks up the recoil.

I sold it to fund another rifle. I loved it. It was my first precision magnum. But it was time to move on up in the shooting world. I had no regrets with that rifle.
