I have a question. I am new to LRPR and wanted advice on the Weather meter and which model I should choose and why. Please help me understand and pick the best one.

Not sure of all of the latest models but my route was
  1. Bought a used Sportsman here for $350. It was a great deal.
  2. Spent time downloading information, asking questions and learning to use it.
  3. Determined that the features provided by the Elite would be great.
  4. Upgraded firmware to make the Sportsman an Elite
Hope this helps

I’ve got a pre-order for the Kestrel/Hornady. I’m currently using the most basic Kestrel model for wind and atmospherics and I input that data to an android tablet for firing solutions. I like being able to experiment with solvers but I learned the hard way that tablets will shut down on a hot, summer day at the range and in direct sunlight, they’re nearly unreadable.

It would honestly depend on what you want to connect to the kestrel or if your want to use a ballistic calculator built into it. I have been a fan of 4dof for awhile that's why I went with the kestrel/Hornady preorder plus it's 15% off right now with coupon code 15HDS

I went the new Kestrel/Hornady 4DOF version as well. With the discount mention, it’s by far the best value. I find it’s the easiest system to true 800 yard plus.

The first thing you need to decide is if you want your Kestrel to also calculate your drops for you with the atmospheric conditions you measure, or if you are going to do that elsewhere. If you are going to do it in another device, do you want it bluetoothed over from the Kestrel or are you okay transferring it manually?

Crews.
The Hornady 4DOF seems to be very popular. Is it possible to transfer the data to Hornady 4DOF ? If not then it would have to be able to calculate the data itself

So how does the Hornady version stack up against the 5700 with AB?

Since the 4DOF version won't be released for another month, I think we'll have to get back to you on that

As far as features, my understanding is the only difference between the two is one uses AB, the other 4DOF. All the other features are the same. Bluetooth linking to rangefinders is still good. Transferring of profiles between the Link app and the Kestrel is still good. I'm hoping, but not expecting, a perfect release. My hopes are the 5700 has been out for years, so hopefully we won't see bugs. The realist in me says they've introduced a new ballistic calculator, so I'm sure there will be unexpected issues, like turn on Gyro in 4DOF and all of a sudden the wind hold has doubled, or some other weird issue.

I believe in one of these threads kestrel commented that it is not elite, limited number of gun profiles, targets, etc. It would be nice to see this model add to the nice comparison table they have on the site.

I'll defer to you. I remember them saying you had 3 gun profiles in the Kestrel, but could create multiple profiles in Link and swap them over, but I can't remember everything else that was said since that thread had a lot of responses in a short amount of time

I went with the elite for some of these differences, one gun and different factory ammo would consume all the slots, not having to go back and forth with the app to load guns and profiles was important. Having multiple targets and the range card was too, I would like more than 10 targets, it would be great to be able to build all your cof into the device ahead send like it would be valuable. I have yet to shoot my first match yet so please deeply discount my information, these were just my justifications ahead of my purchase.

The rangefinders are listed in the FAQ section of the web page.

  • Leica Rangemaster CRF 2800.com
  • Vectronix Terrapin X
  • Bushnell Elite 1 Mile CONX

From the link above "Additionally, some range finders that connect to AB units will not connect to 4DOF units. "

If you want to link up with a pair of Sig Kilo3000BDX LRF binoculars, it seems like you need a Kestrel with Applied Ballistics and if you want to do ELR stuff, you probably want AB Elite which costs more.

The 4DOF should do calculations pretty much as well as AB Elite but it evidently won't link with the Sig setup.
