I just got a new B&C BCS1000 to put on to my 700P. I put the stock on today and over-torqued it badly. I used a regular torque wrench (NOT the wheeler engineering FAT wrench) and I thought I torqued it for 60 in/lbs, but I guess I had a malfunction (whether it was mechanical or mental, I don't know).

Anyways I kept waiting for the wrench to click at the proper torque and it never did. I ended up stripping the back trigger guard screw completely and it is so tight in there, I have no clue how I am ever going to get it out - can anyone help me out?

Re: HELP!!! I F$#%*& Up big time!!!!

Do what Nomad said.

But for future reference to get to 65 in/lbs with a standard wrench if no torque wrench is available, use a the correct allen or torx for the screw you are using and turn the nut 90° after finger tight. That's what Badger Ordnance gives as a reference when using a standard wrench on their ring nuts which are at 65 in/lbs as well.

I know you have a torx but the important part is the 90 degrees after finger tight so you don't strip it out.

Re: HELP!!! I F$#%*& Up big time!!!!

Is there a possibility I tightened it so much I broke the aluminum bedding block in the stock?

For how tight the screw is in there, I am getting a lot of movement of the barrel in the channel.

I feel sick about this.

Thanks for the reassurance... I just can't believe I did this. I thought it was getting too tight, but I just kept torquing waiting for the click of the torque wrench - and it never came

Re: HELP!!! I F$#%*& Up big time!!!!

i have no idea what this part is... but if you just have stripped bolt, use an easy out bit. If you stripped the actual threads of the material you were screwing into, use a heli coil set... go to a hardware store and then home... easy fix in 10 min or less.

Re: HELP!!! I F$#%*& Up big time!!!!

It shouldn't be that complicated, a gunsmith? really? its a screw.

If you can turn it and it will not back out of the action, try having someone exert pressure on the exposed end of it with a punch or something while you try backing it out. If that fails, drill it or drive it out, simple since its the rear and its exposed. The threads are already destroyed if it turns and will not back out of the action, if you drill it use the bit size appropriate for a tap in the size and pitch of the factory bolt, and drill it centered and straight, a drill press would help. Helicoils are not a very good solution, if you cannot restore the threads with a tap go to a slightly larger diameter.

If the head is stripped you could use an easy out, or you could cut, or more simply drill the head off, remove the action from the stock and back the screw out with pliers, it should turn easily with the tension relieved.

I highly doubt you damaged the stock, if so then epoxy is your friend, and possibly pillars if the bedding block was harmed. But the M700 action is round, and in a B$C stock meets a similarly shaped piece of aluminum the force is well distributed across an arc.

Good luck

Re: HELP!!! I F$#%*& Up big time!!!!

Beef nailed it if you are competent you can fix it by just drilling the head out. Basically it will relieve the pressure and you will be able to just unscrew it and the other action screw. We do it all the time at work. On the other hand it depends on your equipment and capability. You need a HSS centerdrill and a bit that's the same size or a little bigger than the threaded portion. You will drill it deep enough to have the head fall off or you can break it off when you get close. Everything else was explained in the previous post.

I don't believe you cracked the aluminum maybe you dented it but I highly doubt you cracked it.

Did you strip the head of the screw or the threads?

If you just spun the bit, tearing the hell out of the cap, then the fix is pretty easy. Just put the sucker in a drill press and drill/mill off the head of the screw. Once you get rid of the head, remove the other action screw and pull the action out of the stock. If the remains of the rear action screw don't just back out by hand, then throw a set of vice grips on it and back it off.

It ain't rocket science, but if any of the above doesn't make sense, then take it to a 'smith.

If you stripped the threads in the receiver you will need to have a smith put an thread insert in there.

Properly calibrated tools will save you a hell of a lot of distress.

Good question. I took it as the threads in the receiver were stripped. If it's just the screw head then fix it yourself as described by a few above.

Re: HELP!!! I F$#%*& Up big time!!!!

If you aren't really that good with tools, or working on things I'd let the gunsmith do it. New screws are easy enough to get, and there are ways to remove stripped bolt without too much hassle.

As far I know only the head of the screw was stripped, but I over-torqued it so much, maybe the receiver threads are messed up. The smith I took it to seems to think its only the bolt, so I am hoping he is right. It has been there for a week and I don't know if he has had a chance to look at it yet. I am definitely anxious to hear back from him about it.

I am hoping the stock is ok as well...

I will post again when I find something out. Thanks for all the input last week.

BTW - Sorry I put this in the wrong section, I was freaking out and hastily put it in this section of the forum.

Re: HELP!!! I F$#%*& Up big time!!!!

Considering the OEM floorplate (I assume that's what you're using) is garbage, I would not worry too much. It would split long before you damaged the aluminum block in the stock or the steel of the receiver.

My two cents.

I was thinking the same thing... that bottom metal that came with it is garbage.
