Help identifying rifle

Hi Guys,

I received the below email, with pics from a co-worker. He has no info on the rifle other that what he states in the email, copied below. I don't recognize it either. Any help identifying the rifle would be appreciated.

"I received for free from my neighbor who is in his 70’s who just inherited from his Father that just passed at age 98. My neighbor did not have much information other than saying “My daddy owned it for years and I don’t know anything about it but it’s yours”. It’s really gunked up and needs a cleaning something fierce. (Still, not bad for free). There are not many markings, no fixed sights, looks to be a decent size round and if I measured correctly the barrel is 22.”

Japanese Arisaka
Nagoya Arsenal (had to check, get em confused )

Type 38 or Type 99 is beyond my skill level from just looking at the receiver.

Thanks for the help. I was able to use the info provided and some Google search time and identify it as a Arisaka Type 99 from the Nagoya plant. Based on no series marking it is a pre series 1, produced 1939-1945.

Always sad seeing stuff like this sporterized. I get they were a dime a dozen back in the day, but still.
