So I've got a few pistols but I'd like to branch out and buy a rifle. I was looking at maybe the ruger 10/22 target tactical (decent, with room to improve if I want to put more money into it in the future) so I can practice on the cheap. Anyway, this leaves me in the market for a scope. Since I'm just getting started, and I don't have a ton to spend, I'm in the position of wanting to get the best scope I can get for 100-200 dollars. Since I'm mostly planning for 50ft-100yd target practice (and no hunting) from the shoulder but from a rest too (maybe even more from a rest), I was thinking along the lines of something that's 6-18x to 6-24x range... maybe?

Anyway, here's what I've narrowed it down to so far, and I have no idea which of these would be the best one to go with (i.e. which one is affordable but sucks the least lol).

Which would you choose if you were in my shoes? Are there any others that I'm leaving out or missing in the 200$~ or less range?

Sorry for all the newb questions... I've tried to do my research but the whole learning curve with this scope stuff seems pretty steep when you're starting out and have no experience with any of it. Any help or suggestions you would offer would help immensely.

Oh, and if you're feeling especially bored or generous, thoughts on a specific make and model of sight rings would be helpful too. I've seen people say weaver is a good brand, but there are tons of different styles of weaver rings to choose from.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help you can give. I'd really like to do this as right as possible the first time around, while staying within my budget.

Re: Help me choose one of these lower-priced scopes?

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at these the other day, but it seems like a fair share of people have had some complaints about the quality of the cheaper crosshair model compared to their higher priced stuff (Which seems to get good reviews all around).

Well, it comes with a "Combination scope base adapater" that works with weaver style mounts.

The vortex pricing is pretty nuts for sure.

Re: Help me choose one of these lower-priced scopes?

I have an 8-32 Crossfire and a 5-20 Razor. I'm not saying that the Crossfire line should be compared to high end scopes. I think they are a good value. I had the Crossfire on my .300wm and had zero issues. I bought a Razor for my .300 and now I'm looking to put the Crossfire on a .22 or .223. Really, I don't foresee any issues it handling the recoil of your Ruger.

The lower end Bushnells are a good value too. I had a Trophy 3-9 on a T/C muzzle loader and have a Banner on my 12 ga. slug gun. Both those scopes ran flawlessly.

Re: Help me choose one of these lower-priced scopes?

I have a banner on my Marlin 22, its a good scope for the money for that application. Also look at the Nikon prostaff's or smaller buckmasters. They are great scopes for plinkers.

I was wondering about this today... I actually called bushnell, the tech people said that at 6x it should be able to focus at things 8-12 yards away. Maybe they were blowing smoke?

Re: Help me choose one of these lower-priced scopes?

What's the closest you think those 6-24x scopes can get without experiencing parallax? Seems like the AO adjustment would take care of it from 15-20 yards on (assuming we're talking 6x), no?

Re: Help me choose one of these lower-priced scopes?

non AO centerfire scopes are mostly set at 100 yds, rimfire at 50 yds

a lot of centerfire AO scopes go down to only 50 yds,( bushnell elite series goes lower)

it is somewhat counter intuitive but AO is more important for short range precision than longer range

also never trust the stated distance hashmarks for AO, check it yourself and remark the lines/distances

Re: Help me choose one of these lower-priced scopes?

Spotch, actually bought the Bushnell Banner during an emergency once to shoot a f class match at 600 yards, it got the job, done, it was pretty good value for money in my opinion. Optical clarity faded a bit past 18x I think, but it wasn't bad.

The one I'd go with

Another decent option is the Vortex Crossfire that SWFA has for $99. However, I've heard of quite a few failure reports. A lot more than I have about the above Simmons, but Vortex does have a great warranty better than most of the other cheaper scopes. So if you plan to have this scope for 20 years, that may be the one you want as Vortex will keep taking care of you. I still think I'd much prefer the Simmons above though.

Another decent option is the Center Point 4-16x40 they sell at Walmart, and since it's Walmart you can always return it if you don't like it. It's a pretty decent scope I've used on a .22 in the past. The glass is decent, but not great. Honestly, the above Simmons has better glass, but the Center Point had more features and better turrets, and was cheaper.

Those are what I'd look at. I'm not a fan of most of the lower end Bushnell's, but I know some guys that do use them.

Also there is a Mueller or something that's popular on RimFireCenteral.com, but I know nothing about them so I can't recommend or say anything about it.

As for rings, I'd personally go with the Burris Signature Zee rings with the inserts.

It's funny you should mention that, I was just looking at that Simmons myself.

I'm still surprised no one likes the pentax I posted at the top... shame, since you'd think a camera manufacturer would know how to produce some high quality glass.

thanks again for the tips and feedback guys
