Bottom line: I am having fun and learning, but I am not happy with my technique on barricades and tank traps. I talked to folks at the match and did some reading and the consistent advice was some blend of minimizing my input. I tried free recoil, or something very close on the "steps" barricade on the first stage, and missed (first shot was high, but the shot was called perfectly) I think some of the inconsistency I saw was recoil management (308 win, 178 ELD's at 2660)
Problem: when I try to lean into the rifle and stack my torso behind the rifle, driving the rifle into the obstacle, I am not terribly steady and holy heartbeat batman, my pulse will make the crosshairs jump .5mils or so, very difficult to break a clean shot when a little natural wobble is combined with the heartbeat. I tried lightening the pressure and I have significant issues with recoil management and had shots impacting high for no reason.
solution: you tell me
Problem: tank traps kick my butt during a stage, but I am super steady during practice. both matches I have seen tank traps have wrecked me, but then I shoot a few shots after the match from the tank traps (all of them) and I am rock steady and can't seem to miss.
Solution: build a better position from the start (also, what do you do?)
Problem: consistent grip I tried a very soft/gentle grip on the rifle to help with a stable sight picture (see heartbeat comments above), as the video shows, I was unable to maintain a good grip through every single shot - Solution, grip the rifle and pull it straight to the rear next time (any other advice?)
Problem: to dial or hold. tank trap stage, 2 targets, 2 shots each from each of three traps. I planned to dial, but chose to hold last minute. my first shot was no hold and obviously hit the dirt. the second shot, I didn't hold for the full drop. it was a moment of complete dumb@ssery on my part.
Solution: shoot the stage as planned, and don't make changes when you grab your rifle (and plan better, that too) what do you do?
Bags/gear. if you saw my other videos in the PRS thread you probably saw me fighting some bags. this time, I tried to streamline some gear, only breaking out the huge homemade pillow when I knew it would help. the addition of the tactical udder (and practicing with it) helped, I didn't use the sling this match for any real purpose, but I also didn't fight the sling this match, so +1 for not using it.
if you got this far, thank you. please comment regarding what you see in the video and help me (and hopefully others) get better.
side note: the magnetospeed t-1000 target hit indicators are awesome (the flashing lights on some of the far targets)
