My Dad just stopped by and dropped off a couple rifles from my late grandfathers collection. I’m having troubles identifying this rifle, I’d appreciate your input!

Buffalo Arms used to have 11x52R 1878 cartridge in boxes of 20, the shipped price per cartridge is around $5 each...$82 a box of 20 plus shipping. The Dutch used the 11.3x50R in the single shot 1871and the “new” 11x52R in the 1871/88 Beaumont-Vitali magazine rifle.

That would be awesome, I’m going to look into it. My Grandpa would undoubtedly be smiling down!

I love this forum so much, so many willing to take time to share information. I appreciate you guys!

Here's a thread on making 43 Dutch (11x52R) cases. Thought it might be helpful...

Good read, however way over my head.

I’m following Buffalo ammo and will report back when I send some rounds downrange.

I think I’m going to display this rifle in my reloading room, I really love it! I appreciate everyone’s contributions. Learning about these old guns is really exciting for me.

Dave Gullo, the owner of BA, is a great guy and avid shooter of old stuff.

They do try to keep a selection of kit to get older obsolete kit working.

If you are into it their bullet moulds are very nice a drop excellent items, can be customised

watch C&Rsenal on youtube, Othias does a history on WW1 firearms that are documented to have been used. He did one on this rifle. Goes into the evolution and how and who was involved. They also fire the arms discussed.

Definitely one of the better Youtube channels out there. Very informative.

Very cool rifle! I was at a loss when I saw it... never even heard of that. So many interesting early bolt guns, straight-pulls, calibers, etc.

Thanks for posting... and thanks for the history lesson!

Cheers,

Sirhr

P.S. Hang on, I'll post an article a friend of mine just did!

CHEERS, Sirhr!

I think it's pretty cool too, I just wish I knew he had this collection when I was deer hunting with him when I was a kid. He never mentioned his collection of old weaponry.

I've got some other really cool rifles from his collection as well!

Looking forward to that article.

My mistake. Definitely a Beaumont vitali as others are saying. Missed that the rear of the bolt was small and not as large as a Vetterli. If you should ever try to shoot this thing I would recommend reaching out to both Ian at forgottenweapons.com and the YouTube channel C&Rsenal. Both are world class experts in old and weird stuff and like to help folks out. Check out some vids on forgottenweapons.com while you are at it.
