Help me pick between 3

I have searched, read reviews, talked to folks who have owned and I think I have it narrowed down to these three. This will be my first bolt action, to be used for target and possibly hunting. I have approximately 1500 to spend (more than that and I get into hot water with the warden). Knowing full well that some upgrade work will be done this is what I have come up with. The scope has already been picked out (Mark 4 4.5-14x50mm LR/T M1, couldn't pass up the deal). So here they are (all .308)

FN TSR XP
Remington SPS Tactical
Savage 10FP

I would replace the stock on all three as I believe it is pretty much the same on all. I have decided to go with Seekins rings and base (except for on the FN, it comes with a Near base). If I ended up with the Remmy or the Savage I would pick up a CDI DBM and magazine.

The totals that I came up with:

FN TSR XP = 1025 (rifle, rings, and one magazine)
SPS Tactical = 1065 (rifle, rings, base, dbm, and magazine)
Savage = 1125 (rifle, rings, base, dbm, and magazine)

That being said, they are all pretty much in the same ball park. I have money left over for a stock upgrade and possibly a bipod depending on which stock I choose (I have looked at B&C and Manners primarily).

So, if you had to choose, which would you choose? Thanks.

Re: Help me pick between 3

I'll be first to go I guess.

700
10fp
then TSR

700 because it has good out of the box acuracy and the action I feel is more solid than the Savage.

Savage second because even tho I dont like the action they are still pretty good rifles. They have come a long way over the years.

TSR honestly never heard or seen one before. And from what I skimmed through on the net they dont seem too amazing. But then again havnt ever shot one or seen one so I couldnt tell you.

Re: Help me pick between 3

i vote fn spr, but i would get a action from cdnn for $350, manners stock and a custom barrel. should put you right around $1500

action/dbm $350
manners msc-t $500
custom barrel $600 installed

total $1450 give or take alittle for shipping/tax. if you can find stuff used even better. this would however give you choice on barrel length, contour, twist rate and pretty much guarenteed to shoot well.

Re: Help me pick between 3

*Warning, I havent shot any of those rifles so this reply is pretty much useless*

BUT

Im in the same position. $1500 for a basic rifle and Ive been doing a lot of reading on here. Ive decided on the 700 SPS Tac. Seems like its the standard for bolt action rifle, but Ive read good things about the Savage and FN as well.

From what Ive read the 700 is more difficult to work on if you decide to upgrade parts though. As where Ive read the Savage can be done easier. Someone correct me if Im wrong.

Be sure to post pics of whatever you choose though!

Wise advise there. Should have consulted with you before I bought my rifle. Over one year, I have almost replaced everything......could have done it cheaper your way.

Re: Help me pick between 3

I just bought a PBR XP barreled action off gunbroker and threw it into a McMillan tactical stock off the specials page. Total cost was just over $1100. There are a couple more on GB if you want to go the FN route without the gunsmithing and wait time.

How so? Pretty much anything you can get for the 700 can be had for the FN and Savage.

Re: Help me pick between 3

I have a savage 10FP LE1 20" in .308 and it shoots as well as any off the shelf Rem. 700 for a few hundred dollars less. Plus it already has alot of the features that people add to the rifles. Like oversized bolt handle, pillar bedding, bull barrel and an extra sling stud for your bipod. I shoot up to 600 yards with it with no problem. Have not tried it at further distances.

You left a few things out. Bedding and coating is going to run another $4-500, and being the barrel is $350 of that $600 I'm not sure where your going to get it installed for another $250. Most smiths charge $250 just to true the action, then another $250 on top of that to chamber, thread, and install the barrel. That build is going to cost you at least $2K when it's all said and done.

wow you need to show around benchmark barrels will install a barrel of your choice for $565+shipping, and there bedding normally runs between 100-150. there is no reason you need to coat the rifle other than its cool!!! if so just krylon and use the money you saved and put it towards the custom build over factory.

I would much have a custom rifle that shoots lights out with krylon than a factory rem, fn, or sav with a killer cerakote job. but i am into rifles because i like the shooting not the staring.

I coat some of my rifles because i can afford it, if i was on a budget i wouldn't even consider it.

Re: Help me pick between 3

Those 3 rifles are not the same.

I would go to a shop and handle them. Pick the rifle "you" like and don't worry about what it costs.

Ending up with a rifle you are not happy with because it was a few dollars less will be the most expensive in the long run.
