Help me pick my AR15

I'm looking at getting me an .223 for long range pratice & varmint hunting. I believe i've settled on a 1 in 8" twist to shoot 55 - 80 gr. pills in it. It seems about like the RRA's are the complete package for accuracy, dependabilty, and stock trigger from the reviews on it. Only thing is i wish it was a little lighter, 8 - 9lbs. range. I looked at the bushmaster but i've read mixed reviews on accuracy for it. Seems like a monday-friday built gun.... Give me some suggestions. Looking to spend up to $1200

Thanks,
Brandon

Re: Help me pick my AR15

I suggest you give Jim & Nanci Lambert a call at www.firebirdprecision.com 505-847-0108 & talk with him. Not sure the cost as most of his guns are built to your specs but I bet if it isn't in your range, he will be real close. They are on MST, so if you are on the east coast, don't call really early, the phone also rings in the house.

I'm no great shooter but my 20" Firebird rifle is. I had the opportunity to shoot some longer range shots last year. I hit 8 of 10 ipsc size steel targets at 625yds. For me, that is a LONG ways with a 223. I also put a 5 shot group the size of a quarter on a paper target at 200yds. You could cover all five holes with a quarter. You could see the tears past the quarter but all five holes were under it. I could hardly believe it! Fed brass, v.v.n135 powder & 69gr SMK bullet.

I have been very happy with my Rock River - good product w/o the high prices. To get the "perfect" rifle you will need to go custom.

Re: Help me pick my AR15

Havoc, are you considering the cost of everything else that you might want? Scope, bipod, magazines, etc., all add up.

You also mention weight. A long range rifle is going to need things to make it accurate, such as a scope. You're just going to have to accept that your rifle is going to weigh more than a carbine.

I would seriously consider this company:
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/

I just ordered their m4 upper. According to the notorious m4 chart bcm seem to be extreamly high quality for the money.

There are reviews here about them, one reviewer claims that he ran one bcm upper to 26000 rounds before he had a failure to extract, then he cleaned the gun for the first time!

I would agree. Build it the way you want it.

Re: Help me pick my AR15

I have a Bushmaster Predator. I've managed to shoot several cloverleaf groups with it using a bipod (and Wal-Mart bulk Federal).

Sure wish I could pull that off with my M1A and match ammo.

It must have been built on a Wednesday.

Agreed, there is possibly not a better price/performance company to buy from other than BCM. And i'm not just referring to the chart. I mean customer reviews and recently the S.W.A.T. article on the Filthy 14

Now as regarding to the OP if you want lighter weight there is the line of barrels such SPR/SAM-R barrels that are a medium contour and not that huge varmint barrel. Then you can always pick up a 20" gov't profiled barreled upper from BCM get someone to take the front sight off and have at it. If you want to go lightweight i suggest you order the parts and build it yourself or get a smith to build it.
