Hunting & Fishing Help me select a 308 win bullet for long shots

Re: Help me select a 308 win bullet for long shots

Very interesting thoughts here on some longer range deer options.

In my TN area I was looking at maybe 150 yards for deer, so model 70 6.5x55, 129g Interlocks, & a Swaro 1.5-6x42mm.

I have a chance to hunt an area where 500 yard cornfield shot is very likely, so I was researching something bigger like 7WSM.

But I would really prefer to stay with a familar caliber & rifle. My FN SPR 308 & Nightforce is looking like a good option. Or even my swede with a little more glass & a hunting VLD might work very well.

Thanks,
Tim

Nothing wrong with the model 70 6.5 as it is set up now.
You might consider a 2.5-10, but the 6x at 500 yards with the 129 interlocks will work just fine.
If you handload, you can easily approach 3000 fps in a modern action with 129 class bullets.

Agree, and I wish I would have had it in the stand last year.
I got a 70 7mmRemMag heavy barrel and put my Nightforce on it.
Then the nice 8 point stepped out at 52 yards not 500 yards.
The deer is in the freezer, but other set up would have been better for that shot. This year I will bring them both :)

Killed a lot of deer with a 308 and 165 SGK and Accubonds. Switched to 178 AMAX for hunting and long range.

I would say putting one through the heart you need to expect it to run 75 yards or so.

I don't take heart shots unless it is in an open field where I can watch it and easily find it.

I hate tracking.
