Help Picking a Scope for NRL22/X

Hello,

I cannot decide on an optic for my vudoo. Would like to keep the price around $2K but keep going in circles and creeping back up to my PRS/NRL match optic (ZCO).

You guys who shoot this discipline, have any recommendations?

I have had Razors and ATACRs in the past. Kind of looking at a MK5 as well if I can snag one. Do i move up to an ATACR 5-25? Do I look at the XTR3?

You use a XTR II for NRL22? Mine only focuses down to 45 yards.

If you already have a ZCO on your match rifle you're going to most likely want a ZCO on your 22 assuming you also do matches. I find the 22 matches are equally competitive, and tiny ass 1/2" targets blending in on overcast days having that ZCO clarity sure is nice.

This is how the thought process has gone.

25M Parallax, Lots of elevation, Good glass, Good eyebox, Good reticle, Good Tracking.

So far here is what I considered:
S&B 5-25 with Grid or XRGen 2 (Cant find used ones for less than $2700, used to be 2k all day)
Used Minox ZP5 or new Minox LR (Parallax only goes down to 50m and never see used ones for sale)
Kahles (kinda shitty glass for the money)
Gen 2 Razor (Not bad for $1600 , but had a few in the past and resolution for small .22 targets may not be the best)
Leica PRS ( Can get for $2200, but doesn't really seem much better than a MK5 or ATACR 5-25)
MK5 5-25 with PR2MIL - (35MM tube so need to buy a mount and they are never in stock at military discount price)
ATACR 5-25 with Mil XT (Can get for $2500 but I am getting closer to used ZCO prices, also was not impressed with glass for price)
ATACR 7-35 with mil XT (Less elevation than the 5-25 but has better glass, can get for $2800 which is even closer to another ZCO)
XTR3 with SCR2 (Cheap with discount but not in stock. Hands on I really liked this but the turrets were meat grinders and I have heard some have worse than Gen 2 razor glass)
Used 5-27 ZCO with MPCT3 ( Fuck me how did I get here)
New 5-27 ZCO with MPCT3X (Well its only a few hundred dollars more)

I have a bunch of 34mm 20moa mounts so getting something with 35 or 36 will cost another 400 ontop for a Spuhr or Mbrace.

I’m in the same boat as you. I’m getting in the 22lr game and been racking my brain on what glass.

I was wanting to spend around that 2k mark but nothing has wowed me at that price.

As for as the mk5 and atacr 5-25 they parallax 50-45yds so there out and I need to shop where ever you are finding ZCO close to 2500 buck.

March 4.5-28x52 high marster FML-PDK
Bout 2900 bones but still a grand cheaper then ZCO

I originally had a Nightforce NX8 4-32 with the tremor3 reticle on mine. Only thing I didn’t like was the parallax adjustment hash marks. It doesn’t have the yardages as a starting point for focus. It seemed that the parallax was real finicky at the closer distances 50-150 yards. I switched over to a Bushnell HDMR2 and absolutely love that scope on it. I patiently waiting the release of the new Bushnell XRS3 to see how that works out. With a 30 moa rail I can dial both of those scopes to 29 mils. I have all of my optics mounted in American defense mounts. I think all 3 of those scopes should fit that 2k price range for ya.

The new XRS is supposed to go down to 50. I think we usually have at least one stage in that 25-35 range. That’s why I want to see how it is. If not I have a few center fires it can sit on.

Maybe you should shoot in a couple of matches with what you have currently? Then you can figure out what you want.

I realize high quality optics do good work. If you have the funds go for it. That being said, good match shooting isn’t impossible without a high speed low drag “paid to pull triggers” optic.

25yd parallax is pretty important. I can do a 35yd parallax, but a 50yd parallax scope is too much to be consistent on the 25yd 1/4" targets.

Go with what ya want. My Vudoo wears a 7-35x56 Mil-XT. Its the most expensive scope I own. I debated alot if it was gonna be worth it.....Im happy. I dont shoot NRL22 yet but I wanted a setup that would work for it when it comes to West Aussie.

7-35 ATACR has 35 mil of elevation regardless of what the published specs are. This is confirmed by every user, myself included. In a 40moa base with a 50y zero, I can dial UP an additional 25.5 mils. 10y parallax is super handy for dry fire practice in your house, basement, garage, or backyard.

Personally I like the .2 mil horizontal and vertical graduations on the reticle. Some don’t as they think it gets busy and that they can estimate accurately in between .5 marks. The mil-xt reticle is almost identical to the Burris XTR-3 reticle. The XTR-3 is a well made optic that is perfect for the NRL22 game and at a great price.

The problem with the 7-35 ATACR is it is right bellow used ZCO price.

If they were $2500 it would be a different story but at that point just spend a few hundred more for a scope that superior in every way.

The NX8 is a turd, Its not even in the conversation

Maybe I need to give the XT3 a try and sell it if I don't like it. The eyebox and glass on the one I played with was very impressive for the price. The turrets were sharp as hell and didn't have the best feel (clicks). But for $1300 or so may be worth a shot and should be easy to sell if I don't like it. The glass is my only real issue being able to resolve small KYL style targets and cutting through mirage in the high desert.

The new March WA is interesting. I need to find out what the real street price is, I really like what it offers and it may offer some other benefits for shooting NRL hunter if I swap the ZCO out. Does anyone know if March still gives 20% discount for military like they used to through Bullets.com? Optics planet has them for about $2900 but they get you with tax too.

Does anyone know if the used S&B market is coming down? They seem to accordion every 2 years.

You should look through both the Atacr and XTR3, I could not see $1500+ worth of difference and was happy I went with the Burris.

I won’t dispute that the ZCO is a better scope. New vs new, the ATACR can be had for about 25% less than the ZCO.

Bushnell DMR3 3-21 has a 25yd parallax, LOW quality, awesome turrets, G4P reticle is similar to the EBR7 offerings from Vortex. $1500 with sunshade and throw lever. Do you want that 25x or more mag .2mil grads on reticle?

I have a March HM 5-42 and a S&B 5-25, and a couple G2 Cronus with APRS6. G2 Cronus is on my Anschutz 1827F, I love the reticle and the scope. Those other two scopes are a hair better in some ways but not $2000 better IMHO.

You misunderstood, only for nrl22 inside 300y. APRS6. ZCO is of course superior, especially looking through mirage or foggy conditions.

The cronus is good. It parallaxes in a different direction than the ZCO. That's about the only thing that might trip me up switching back and forth the two scopes.

Mark 5 don't go low enough
Atacr 5x25 dont go low enough
Shoot a 1/4 " stem at 25 yards and see how it is to shoot when its blurry.

I'm aware that this isn't what you're asking, but $2k-3k buys a lot of ammo to zero a scope. Any reason you're not considering just hopping the ZCO back and forth? The Spuhr mount on a well-mounted quality rail should make that very repeatable, within 0.2 mil or so of the previous setting for that recipient rifle each time you swap.
