Help quick which rifle!?

Okay I am going to use the rifle to hunt and it will primarily be a gun I take to the range, both a 500m and a 1000yd range (eventually) I want a rifle I can hit steel with at 1000yd and eventually put it in an awesome stock. I have a sweet deal on a Rem 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD right now $650 never been fired, comes with harris bipod and surefire tac lite. (I'd use the tac lite for my 870 tactical ;) )

However I'm interested in the Howa Targetmaster Bolt Action Rifle with Nikko Stirling Targetmaster 4-16x44mm Mil Dot Reticle Riflescope .308 Winchester 24" Barrel 5 Rounds Black Overmold Stock Blued Finish HGT93107T1. It is only $601.97 at Cheaper than dirt. comes with a scope and mounts etc.

I love the package and affordability of the Howa. My concern with ordering the how is someday if I decide to build the rifle up. (New action, new barrel etc) will I have to buy an all new stock? I want to put it into a $900 stock and don't wanna have to buy one of those twice. Maybe I would with the Rem to but idk. Hence why I'm here. Please help. I need to make a quick decision. Please post what you think I should go with and why?

I can always put new glass on the Howa or just keep it as it is for a hunter/spare range gun and build a different rifle down the road in 338 lapua or 300 win mag once I am comfortable and a good shooter at 500m and 1000 yds.

stick with the remmy, theres a lot of police model 24 inch 308's running around also. little more money, but get more out of it of longer range is your goal. Not that the aac-sd wont work, but no reason to put yourself at a barrel disadvantage right off the bat. All that is assuming it HAS to be an AICS later. lots of good chassis out there and if you open up that one requirement theres a lot fo wiggle room for best gun talk :)

as a side note, fuck cheaper than dirt.

Why would you get more out of it? It doesn't need to be an AICS later. Just don't want to spend a bunch on a stock I won't be able to transfer if I upgrade. The more I think about it I will probably leave most of the rifle stock. I will replace the stock, likely the trigger and have the action trued but won't get much aftermarket stuff other than that. So is the Howa the way to go in that case? I'm thinking I will keep this build basic and a fun rifle that is capable of 1000yds but can be lugged around for hunting.

I also like that the Howa has a magazine upgrade for less than it cost to do it to the Rem.

I'm really just trying to stay low budget to start out. Hit 500m and not be only a bench gun. I want a bull barrel because I will shoot a lot. I will upgrade the stock to something I like regardless of which rifle. I will Eventually have an optic I like on it regardless of if I'm replacing a cheap one or buying a new one right away.

Is there a better Remington than the sps tactical aac-sd to start with? Which one if so? I don't want a Tikka not that I don't like them I just am trying to stay low budget so I can have an AR and a nice Bolt gun.

I would go with the remington and put it in a 700p or 5r takeoff stock in letter for a ptg bottom metal. Budget worthy awesomeness. The remington will have better support for extras down the road. The aac sd is a great start. It's one of my favorite bolt actions. I would still have it if not for my current custom build.

Go with the Tikka. In the end you will have more in the 700 to get it on the same level as a stock Tikka. When you get to be a better shooter, use the money you would have lost on the 700 and upgrade the Tikka's barrel.

Even though the Rem has a 20 in barrel and the Howa a 24in?

Also I'm looking online I can have the AAC SD for $631 plus $20 for the ffl transfer. Free shipping. The used one I was looking at was $600 and came with a harris bipod ($79) and a stock bullet holder (whatever you call the think that sits on your stock and holds like 10 rounds) He says it's never been fired and he said he already had someone look at the trigger and say it was good from the recall.

Should I buy new and pay $651 or used with no rounds fired (he says) for $600 with a bipod?

Sounds like you need to figure out the details more, and just do some more reading and a lot of shooting.

The people taking their time to reply in this thread know their stuff, so I would take it into consideration.

While the 20 barrel of the AAC doesnt shine at 1000 (not that it cant hit there, and it does do well at 900) - buy the better rifle for what you want to do with it - the Remington 700

I want to get out and shoot I just want to know where to start from. So what about the new or the used? Never bought a used rifle before for that close in $$$ is it better to just buy new?

Well, if it hasnt been fired isn't it new?
Then again, you have to trust him.

I'd still take a lightly used Rem 700 over a new Howa for your goals, it's not like a .308 barrel is going to be on its last legs.

Another Vote for Tikka. I currently own 2 Remy 5R (.308 and .300WM) and a AAC-SD (16.5" .308) and I have to say, after all of the Remingtons over the years they rarely out shoot the Tikka in Accuracy as well as quality.
