I just ordered a bell and carlson medalist for a winchester 70 short action 1 piece bottom metal, well it came in the mail today and while attempting to install I noticed my bottom metal is about 1/2" too long in the hinged mag area? The screw holes line up...do the wssm's have shorter bottom metal? The sku# to the stock is 2971

Is the action a TRUE short action, or is it (as is typical) a long action receiver with a short action caliber.

You need to measure the action holes center to center and order your stock accordingly. Lots of people with something like an M70 .243 or an M70 in a .308 assume they have a short action rifle, which is rarely the case.

Yes I am well aware of all that, the action screws line up but the bottom metal does not fit the inletting by a long shot! That's why I am asking, do the wsm calibers have different bottom metal?

It will not let me upload the picture off my IPad but the stock is a 2 screw stock so it should be the one pice bottom metal, my bottom metal is just a half inch too long in the mag well area? Both action screws line up
