I have a factory remington 700 .260. I wont to change to a varmint heavy contour barrel. There are many out there so I need some help figuring out what I need to look out when buying a new barrel. What twist, and length?Info. please
Any of the bigger well known barrel makers are going to produce a fine barrel for you. I only have expericane with Bartlein, Krieger, and Saturn ABS. However, either of the first 2 would work fine for you. Brux, Rock, and Oby's are also good barrels. Some makers produce a 4 groove and some make a 5 groove. Alot of people "claim" higher velocities with the 4 groove, but I have no experiance on this matter.
Call BJ at 3rd Gen Shooting Supply. He normally has some Krieger barrels in stock ready to ship and the Rem Varmint contour is pretty popular so it's usually kept in stock as much as possible.
Southern Precision Rifles (aka "Bugholes" on this site) keeps a stock of great barrels and has a fine record of completing work on target date. And...don't forget PacNor...they do fine barrels and have some ready for delivery/installation. Google either firm.

Mark answered all of my questions with patience and treated me with respect, not like someone that was just wasting his time. He trained under Boots Obermyer and makes one hell of a good barrel from start to finish not just finishing someone else's blanks.
I would go 1/8.5" even for the heavies. Using a good cut rifled barrel 24" or longer there is no need to go 8" twist. I'd look at Bartlein or Krieger 4 groove. I would never use a 5R groove on 6.5MMs, to me there is no need in it.
I don't trust the button pulled barrels...just my personal preference. Especially for the twist rate. If I were stuck with a button barrel then I would go 8" twist.
