Help with new rifle scope

I have a new remington 5r 308. I would like to use it for target shooting and hunting deer size game where I live in north Alabama and perhaps other areas. I would like to use it also to increase my 17 year old son's shooting skills. He is hoping to be a U S Navy Seal. My eyes are not what you would call good anymore and I would like to consider the higher end scopes (Schmidt and Bender, Zeiss, better Leupold and similar scopes) for their better optics and perhaps just pride in ownership. I live on a farm with moderate wide open spaces (100-700). Any input on scope and reticle would be appreciated

Just my opinion; however, I would not put a S&B on a rifle that cost around 1K for shooting out to 700 yards. Leouplod and Bushnell make some good glass in the 1-2k range that will fit what you need and you can spend the other 2k you might save on ammo. While shooting skills in BUD/S is a good thing, have him concentrate on intestinal fortitude, mental fitness, running and swimming skills to get him through the first two phases of training before he gets to actually shoot in phase 3
