Looks like the German's new service rifle had some legal issues, so the Bundeswehr withdrew the offer for the new rifle. Now HK's 433 and 416s are the only two options. And if the 433 was supposed to be a lower cost rifle over the 416, then it might be a contender.

Heard that HK had a lead time of 20+ months on their products so the Bundenswehr ditched them.
