HOME DEFENSE: Handgun versus Small Frame AR

I have settled on either a glock 19 or 2011 for everything now. I used to be a HUGE ar guy but I like being able to have my belt ready to go and be able to move around faster and use both hands more efficiently with a belt and holster than with a sling and a rifle.

I don't know what I prefer. Thankfully I've not had to defend my home.

I've got shorty ar's with 30's and 60's. I've got pump and semi 12's
I've got g19's with 20 round magpuls.

I don't know. What ever is closest to me. If I can choose I'm grabbing

If I don’t have a choice, I really hope the home invaders have a phobia of old naked white dudes…

Brilliant.

Can use as big a pistol as you want with no downsides

You choose one made for concealed carry with limited capacity controllability sight radius etc
I have 15 round magazines that I have proven at the range. It has a Holosun and a light. It fits the safe and my wife (Alzheimer’s) can’t get to it. Gun and spare 15 round magazine fit in the vertical safe.

I have a shotgun and a Glock 19 next to the bed, but the back up in the next room is a an AR with frangible ammo. We live on a small farm, and not really worried about “over penetration,” I just have a lot of frang left over from a Thunder Ranch class a few years back.

Are you planning on missing a lot? ‘Cus the 5.56 isn’t know for “over penetration.” And that bullshit about “going through a wall and hitting the neighbors” is great urban legend, but doesn’t show up in any police reports.

AR, unless in 9mm, has way too much penetration.

They won't be ready for the helicopter running at them haha
You sound like you have a solid plan to really CQB the intruder!

CQB.
A technique of fire maneuver utilizing the application of surgical firepower combined with surprise, speed, and violence of action upon a given target in such a manner that the opposition‘s will is utterly destroyed.

My wife keeps an 18" Winchester 1873 loaded with Speer Gold Dot 135gr 38 +p's in it. It hold 9 rounds and she can empty all 9 in the A-zone at 25 yards in about 3 seconds. I drilled and tapped the barrel so we could mount a trijicon rmr on it and it has a clamp on light mount. Those little 38s are moving at 1100fps from that barrel ans expand to .65"

We have a wall mounted biometric rack, for the "bump in the night" long guns, above the bed.

I have both a nightstand handgun, and a 5.56 AR close by.

Different circumstances for different people will make different options more viable to some. What works for me, might not be good for you and vice versa.

In my case; I know a LEO response is likely ~40 minutes away. I also have zero neighbors within a half mile. So mag dumping an AR (obviously that's a little extreme) isn't 1) going to put others on danger, and 2) The lethality is greater to ensure the threat is incapacitated...so the 5.56 offers more of what I need.

However, the nightstand pistol is accessible in two seconds. The old saying of pistol to get to the rifle... Pistols are also much more maneuverable.

I also have reinforced strike plates on my doors, drilled into triple studs. Plus I opted for the 3M window film to slow the progress of a break-in. All this does is give me that 20 second head start...and in a fight that is a huge advantage...probably even more so that my choice of firearm.

I don't have any "home defense" rifles. Do have some home defense shotguns. But having gone through maze like stages and shoot houses with all three, pistol's the best choice in my world.
(shotguns would probably only enter into it in a "someone's coming through the door" scenario.)

Taurus Judge, .410 dragons breath shot shells, is what I have for room clearing.

For more longer range engagements I've got another Judge with a scout scope using .410 solids.

Having the same weapon system for both roles simplifies training and logistics, and gives me some redundancy in my weaponry.

I used to keep a lmt 300 black next to me, but I turned 47 and fudlogic kicks in and a shotgun starts making a lot of sense, so I have a Beretta 1301 tactical now. Not a 1911 guy but I guess I'll have to get one for a backup now..... joking about the 1911, not joking about the shotgun..... Wtf is happening to me

9mm micro EDC pistol with light and red dot is literally always within 1 step of me if it's not on me....then there's a 12 gauge and other tools spread evenly as I make my way towards safe which I highly doubt would ever NEED to be opened to handle business

For 5.56 ......there's the copper frangible ammo that won't go through walls too bad and is also FAA rated as a side note....BLUF = reduced wall penetration option for those in need

I don't have one but......a mag fed semi 12 gauge = all you'd ever need 99% of the time if it's just you or you and wife in your bedroom without any other friendlies to worry about in the house......9mm = one bullet per pull.....00 Buck = multiple nearly 9mm sized pellets coming out per pull

Additionally........I keep 2x 30 round mags taped together but 180 degrees opposite.......one has ballistic tips and other has the copper fragmenting rounds.......you could do the same with whatever ammo....say ballistic tips and m855 etc....gives you 2x ammo types and 60 rounds you can swap fast

I got a little side tracked .....so pistol vs AR......if I have both with me and both have a light.....and AR has 30 round mag.....I'm going for that.....also I never shoot an AR without a can so there's that benefit too
