Got the idea for this from a thread around here somewhere. Modeled mine after a Karstens.

My total cost should have been $4, but I ended up making 3 because I kept screwing up the bending process. Total cost was actually $10. I used black ABS instead of Kydex, and it works perfectly.

Cutting it out is easy, bending is not. I tried a hot air gun the first time and that was slow and hard to do. Next time I tried the microwave. That heated unevenly and bubbled the plastic. Finally, I put the sheet in the oven at 250° for just a couple of minutes. Perfecto! The sheet was nice and pliable, and I just draped it over the stock.

Had I known the oven trick the first time, my total time would have been 20-25 minutes.

looks pretty pimp did you just drill some screws into the stock or were some plugs drilled bedded and what not for the mounting?

i'm more of a newb so sorry to anybody who thinks this is an obvious question

3/16" ABS, though 1/8" might work, too. I just looked in the yellow pages under "plastic" and found a place that would sell me a little scrap.

i have a used garbage can that is really thich abs and i have used that to make a couple i have some extra material that i put on the pay it forward thing and i got probly enough for a few more if youall want some pm me with your adress and ill send it out free for yall

Re: Home grown cheek rest

I would have used Kydex if I could have found a source for it locally. I'll be shooting with the ABS rest in the cold today, so we'll see how it performs in 30 degrees.

I do have one that I made where I forgot to put in the slots before I bent it up. It would work fine to drill straight through it. Wouldn't be adjustable though. If anyone wants it, shoot me a PM and I'll send it to you.

I used a piece of mud flap leftover fron a ATV radiator guard I made. Believe it was some sort of polyelthelene, black and would bend and mold with heat. Have yet to bolt using tape to test, with a wood spacer under, then might drill and bolt.
