First, let me say "Holy Crap". This sight is great. I am a newbie. The level of knowledge on here is mind-boggling.My primary pursuit is calling coyotes. I have a bolt gun that I camoed myself, but paint stayed too tacky for too long. I have DPMS LR308 with stainless barrel I want to do. Any tips on getting it to cure faster?

Wondering if the paint was Rustoleum. If so, now you've learned why Krylon gets recommended here so much.
It's important that any residues get removed from the surface before painting; as oils and other things can affect curing. I use acetone to degrease/prep surfaces for painting; be careful with some plastics, it can attack them.
The most neato do-it-yourself camo job I've seen recently was done by dipping a synthetic 'natural style' sponge in paint and dabbing it on to leave an irregular pattern. Spray paints can be used by spraying them into a shallow bowl and dipping the sponge into them. Take extra care to ensure that each coat is completely dry and cured before applying another.

Hair dryer / Heat gun.
Also, As it was already said, make sure you clean it well. I also like to use the hair dryer or heat gun to heat up the barrel before spraying.

Krylon is a cheap easy way to go, if you dont like it simply emoves and start over. It's not hard to do at all. Prep is important as is protecting the finish with a flat/matte clear coat.A low humidity is desired for drying. Here are some examples of some of mine.
