Hello all,

I am wondering if anyone is shooting this bullet and can speak on their accuracy and BC.

I have a place where I can grab a bunch, want to have a reamer built for them, but if they aren't what they are supposed to be, I will stick with the more established 208 Amax.

Thanks for any help~!

Re: Hornady 208 HPBT Any Reports?

Dave,

I haven't tried any as my 300 is standing in the corner right now and my energy is going into my .260 project.

But here is my thinking on the 208 HPBT and why I probably would not try them, even if I was continuing to develop my 300.

So this post is of no help to you at all and is full of conjecture...

a. They are a HP. There is no way the BC will be as consistent as a PC tip

b. They have a lower overall BC than the AMAX. How does this help me?

If the Amax is available, there is no compelling reason to even try these... but they could turn out to be the RL17 of the bullet world.

Seriously... as has been hashed and re-hashed, I cannot even begin to comprehend why Hornady made this bullet unless,

a. They *do* intend to stop making the Amax

or

b. it is intended for .mil contract

Ramblings of an old guy and my .02

Hope you prove me wrong...

You going to make it out to Augustis Ranch this year?

Re: Hornady 208 HPBT Any Reports?

I am going to try to make it there at some point this summer yes.

My understanding is that there is potential for the plastic tip to deform under some loading circumstances. I also understand that some of them can lose a tip. This can and may occur during flight. When this happens it dramatically can influence POI. I also understand that the hpbt is made with a new process and they are supposed to be much more uniform than most typical hollow point bullets.

From other discussions, I am going to give them a try, if I find poor results, I will move to the Amax, but we'll see.

Thanks for your input!

I'd be very interested in what you find.

I've found one Amax in a box with no tip. I've never had a round deviate far enough from intended LOF to ask WTF or suspect a tip came off or got deformed.

The Amax's are made with the same AMP process, I just got some for the .260.

The Amax's are flat magical after transonic. Go forever.

Look forward to a field report.

PM me and let me know which shoot you're going to try for... I try to make it too... like to hook up with new MT guys.

Re: Hornady 208 HPBT Any Reports?

Will do on the AR shoot

I don't know how many of these you have shot, but 9H shoots a ton, and he has reported that with tipped bullets with how he load, occassionally there can be a tip that deforms. Also, finding tipless bullets in the box makes me weary. I know lots of people have had good luck with the Amax, but to me, trading .020 BC for the peace of mind (real or imagined) seems to be good juju for me. I will let you know how they perform, I am a rookie at shooting, so whatever I find will likely mean little. I also probably don't shoot well enough to tell the difference between the bullets anyway LOL.

IMHO, If you shoot the amax, you'll never look back. You can always shoot the VLD if you're willing to come up with that kind of cash but, for me at least, the amax is the ONLY bullet for my 300wm.
