Are the Hornady ELD M bullets just a "new and improved" version of the AMAX bullets marketed more as a selling point , than an actual redesigned bullet ?

The old amax was a good bullet. Shot thousands of them in matches but the eld is better. Better BC and they fixed the tip to be stronger. For a practice bullet the amax would work great but for matches it’s the eld.
Might be people who bought a lot of amax when they were phased out about 8 years ago and wanting to try something else.
