Hornady Match versus Black?

No.

Have shot match and black in .308. Accurate out of several rifles.
Including a Tikka factory barrel, one Rem LTR (years ago), and several custom barrels.

Match in 6.5 creedmoor was good in 2 rifles. Around .6 -.7 MOA
Didnt shoot much more than a box each with this ammo.

Only have checked numbers on each in small amounts (couple shot strings) and it was good for factory, dont recall exact off the top of my head.

Anyone notice anything different in

Accuracy
ES
SD

?

Thanks
Not sure what caliber you're messing with or what bullet weight you're using.

I have tried BLACK in 168 grain out of my AI AT with a 1:12 LW barrel. Groups (5 shot) at 100 yards were close to Match. At 300 and 500 yards, the 5 shot groups were consistently better than BLACK but not enough that would really matter in a practical application. My 500 yard 5 shot groups were 0.6-0.8 MOA for Match and ~1.1 MOA for BLACK

Didn't run chronograph data but my elevation adjustment was pretty spot on for both

Glad someone asked this ?

I was wondering if H just reboxed/rebranded their Match for the AR/black rifle crowd. Easy peasy for them, and would open up a new market for newer shooters.

Different factories? Seconds? Faster powder in the Black series for shorter barrels?

And or lower pressure for semis ?

Specs seem the same.

But for .3 MOA Il pay the $5 extra dollars

Last match I shot had things like 33% ipsc at 938.
10" L x 6.1" W. Hit it with prime

PRIME 130s?

Wouldn't surprise me at all. If it were the 130 grain NORMA bullets, they clock in at 2970 fps at the muzzle.

Speed kills...hint

107 6cm. 3146fps

Interestingly most highly successful PRs ppl run 6 dasher etc at 27-2800.

And hit way more than me. Easier to see splash / where plate was hit etc on first shot so can correct for rest of string

Not surprising but that is the way matches are run these days I think. Recoil is time.

Haven't competed in a couple of 3 years but I am surprised that there isn't a clause that requires a certain velocity out of the rounds

No numbers, just holes in paper.... I bought some Black, Hunter and Match in 6mmARC, really because it was the only way to get brass.
I bought mostly Black because it's cheaper obviously. I was really bummed how poorly the new bolt rifle shot, 1 1/2 to 2" 100 yard groups, at best?

I shot a little of the Hunter and Match and both shot MUCH better.

On the second range trip, after some rounds down the barrel and a cleaning, the Match is putting them into small groups, most holes touching when I don't screw it up. I had originally planned on shooting nothing but 95 grain Ballistic Tips out if it, as it would mostly be used for mid range "plinking" and small/medium critters, maybe deer. But after seeing how well the Match is shooting I bought some ELD-M's to load for it.

I've always liked Hornady factory ammo, but the factory Hornady 6.5 Grendel 123 SST Match, and Black 123 ELD ammo never shot worth a shit out of either of my 5R match-grade 6.5 Grendel barrels. About 1.5" groups was the best it would do. I still use the brass from that ammo for handloads, and those are now shooting 1/2-MOA or better in the same barrels with Nosler 123 Custom Comps.

Like someone else said, is it as good as other brands, no. But back when I bought it at $16.99 a box, it was cheaper than hand loading using Berger bulletts, and did everything I needed to do with it at the time. But now that it's $29.99 a box (or more) everywhere. It ain't worth that, unless you're just hard-up for brass.

In 6.5 creedmoor, Hornady match and hornady black/American gunner ammo shoots about equally as well in every 6.5 I have put it through. Velocity for the 140gr stuff of both varieties was the same. The advantage of the Match brand is the higher BC polymer tipped projectile compared to the BTHP of the Black.

I’ve had great luck with 6CM Black out both of my previous RWS rifle and now my AX. Pics below with data from both rifles and a recent grouping out of the AX. It’s a little stringy on the vertical but I haven’t noticed it to be an issue on steel at distance. Not bad for $28 a box, especially these days.
