My point was that human nature is the problem. We’ll always find something to fight over, however petty.
Conflict is both necessary and inevitable and efforts to prevent problems can often create bigger issues in the long run.
I have three boys and two nephews I love as my own. As mentioned, I’m not warmongering. Just recognizing that it serves a necessary function within society.
Believe me, I understood the "larger point" as what you suggested.
My response still holds. I really believe that if you thought about what I said, at length, you would agree.
Most social friction arises from disagreements. Many disagreements are based on perception vs reality.
The "need" to use violence to solve a problem seems a bit exaggerated if ever you have tried to resolve problems yourself as mediator/helper in the disagreement. Has every disagreement you've witnessed turned into a fight? If you had a helper/mediator role did that not solve things?
Much of what people say is "human nature" in slang/regular conversation, it's not literally "hard-wired" into us. No matter what people may agree on in bar banter, cocktail party chatter, dinner meeting conversation to the contrary.
I grew up with a brother not quite 2 yrs younger than me, and pretty opposite in temperament. Similar body size/strength. We quarreled a lot, came to fists a few times, wrestled probably 30-50 times. And yet we didn't resort to large violence, ever. Why is that, if "war" and its related murder-for-dominance vectors, are essentially human?
From an outsiders perspective (Australia) would not the medical rule out at least 90% of the eligible???

Last numbers I saw - only 30% of the 18-26 population is eligible to serve. Obesity and felonies are big portion of the 70%. But anything can be waived. Could draft then send chubbies directly to fat camp to slim down.
If male only then there will be a challenge that ends up in the Supreme Court - either we are all equal or we are not. Congress blew up all restrictions on females serving in Combat Arms - opened up Ranger school, etc. Cannot have it both ways - either women are equal to men or they are not. If women not eligible for draft, then pull them out of the Combat Arms.
Dirty secret - recruiting has been down for decades and all military specialties opened up to women to even come close to hitting force strength.
I went through Army BCT/AIT in the mid seventies and there weren't any rich kids around and it was a volunteer force then. I don't believe in a draft either because either way the poor will end up fighting the rich's wars.
I strongly believe that if done right then it should be for all persons in that age group, male, female or whatever and legal/illegal.

I vaguely remember being handed a form during a (mid 90s) highschool class- probably second period as that was the “attendance period” and then receiving a card in the mail sometime later. No one ever bashed in my front door, carted me off, or shaved my head. This doesn’t change or increase the legal obligation to register for selective service. Must be a really slow news week.
