Hi Everybody, i have a Howa 6mm Creed with 22” spotter barrel in a Boyd’s at one stock, i took it to the range and after 10 shots it got hot, real hot, i could not hold the barrel.
At 100 yards it is sub MOA but i want to go 600 and then 1000 yards, will this setup do it?

If suggesting a new barrel for this Howa action what should i go with.

A few comments:

- What velocity are you getting? I'm guessing somewhere around 3000 fps

- I periodically take my 6 BRA out to 1500, and it has roughly similar FPS (slightly less).

- "Sub-MOA" only has relevance if you know the target size. Also, sub-MOA at 100 yards does not mean sub-MOA at 1000 yards. My 6 BRA will print 1/4 - 1/2 MOA groups at 500 yards, but it won't do that at 1k. My last time out, I was in variable 10-20 mph winds shooting at a 5" target at 1000 yards. The one hit I got out of 10 was one of my best shots of the day.

- Given the above, work on getting you to better than sub-MOA at 100 yards. I haven't shot a Howa, but it should be able to get better than that.

I prefer a heavier barrel profile for that very reason. Also, the 6 cm is slightly overbore to begin with so shooting it hot will only accelerate barrel throat wear.

The beauty is, you burn out your current barrel getting good at 600 and 1,000 yds (maybe 1,000 rounds?), rebarrel with a heavier contour, and go again!

A 22" barrel in 6 Creed should yield high enough velocity for 1000 yards. What type of ammo/bullet are you shooting? You should be using a "match" type bullet with a high B.C.

The Sporter contour barrel isn't great at long strings of fire, so like others have said: don't do it. Mirage from that barrel is probably pretty wack with 10 round strings.

I'm more concerned with your optics setup. Do you have the adjustment to reach out to a 1000 yards? What optic and rail are you using?

Thanks everybody, i appreciate the advice,

- As far as optica go i have a Vortex Viper HSLR and a Falcon Menace both go to 25 power. Looking at getting the Nightforce competition or
benchrest, whichever will cost less.
_ With the current ammo situation i have only been able to get Hornady Black 105 BTHO and Nosler 90 Accubond. still looking for ELD match

- The guy that suggusted i dont hold the barrel, well this is the first time i felt so much heat from a barrel and was curious.

Sorry for this question but i am still learning, I have always had Rem 700 actions, and familiar with them, not familiar with Howa actions, can i rebarel to a 6 GT or anything else for that matter with the this 1500 action? looking at 30" heavey barrrel and maybe a better stock than the Boyds at-one i am using now.

Thanks again.

You can re-barrel it in whatever you want as long as it fits the action length and has the same case head diameter of your bolt. (Consider the feeding system too before you make a decision. Detachable mags, blind mags, etc..)

Howas are metric threads, but there are plenty of smiths/companies making barrels for Howas now.

Before you start spending more money changing things you already have, I would ask yourself what are your objectives for this rifle? What are you hoping to achieve with it?

It sounds like a regular hunting rifle currently. You could check out the large Howa build thread on this site for some ideas/inspiration.
