Myself and the guy I shoot with are going to Pasquotank, but we're just a couple of Fudds who shoot for fun and we know less than nothing about what to expect and what to practice. Could someone explain how these things are generally set up?

Are we given target sizes and a layout/map before we start off?

Do we get to each position and throw our stuff down and get set up, tell the RO we're ready to shoot, and just wait for clearance to send?

How is the pistol portion usually set up? Is it integrated into the rifle positions or separate?

Since my bud is a much better shot with the rifle we figured I'll spot and slope-dope and call wind for him since he's math challenged, he'll just dial in what I give him and shoot. And then I'll handle the pistol portion. We also figured we'd set the rifle to MPBR so we don't have to dial elevation till we're past 260 yards.

Any advice at all is greatly appreciated.

its all done with mirrors......the RO's drink heavily, and the shooters use rabbits foot and rosary beads along with non-scented santaria candles.....savages are the schnitz and the pistol stages are all shot with airsoft........guns are dangerous!!

I'll fit right in, then. I'll drink heavily and bring a Salvage.

be ready for anything, time constraints, shooting from all posistions, unknown distance targets, unknown location targets, moving targets. if you can perform those tasks well you will good to go. be ready to have everything you need in one pack because they probably won't let you go back and get anything once you are in the field, spare batteries for range finder, dope cards, shooting mat, calculator.

hope this helps this is how some of the west coast matches are so I assume at least some of it will transfer over to the east coast matches.

Biggest reason to go to a match- Have fun, dont take it to serious, and talk to shooters as much as you can.

Also, you everything to your advantage, if the course of fire just says shoot the plate, and there is a table and all kinds of shit around, use what you can to build the most stable position. Tactical matches force you to think outside the box. Know your dope and make sure it is solid, dont print something off of JBM the night before. Actually get real field dope.

DON'T JUST SHOW UP TO WATCH! Take your guns and shoot the match. You'll learn a ton at your first match. Every match I've been to has been filled with a bunch of guys that remember being the noob and are more than willing to show a couple new shooters the ropes.

You're not gonna win your first match and even if ya did, you wouldn't be driving home a new Caddy so go, shoot & have fun.

Deadly ... get a reply from John, he says he's going to try and run another JST meet before Pasquatonk. I offered to help out if needed, and if not I'll shoot that one to get my feet wet. My Pasquatonk shooter won't be there but it's not a team event anyway, iirc.

Got the new rifle set up and started running thru the dope tables yesterday. So far every distance has been right by the numbers. All over the 2"x2" target to 350 yards. We're taking it to the 600 yard range tomorrow or Sunday to run the rest of the numbers, assuming my ammo gets here.

As the Match Director, let me drop a little G2 here. But first I'm gonna need $500 first and I do take credit cards.

No seriously, EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE is a first time competitor. And yes, Jenna Jameson was a virgin once.

I've competed in shooting sports for a long time, I've shot in the same squad with professionals, I've watched them game the match repeatedly. Which is fine if thats how the match is established.
I have run many matches before, but for this one I wanted something that took the onlooker anixety out of the mix. Thats why it's being run in a team manner, with no other teams standing around(except the first stage which is the CBS) to joke or make the new shooter feel like he's doing something wrong.

During most of the match you won't have any other contact except for your partner and the RO's running the stage. It will be you, your partner, your stick and your knowledge. You will be given before the start of each stage a full brief, which will include, target size, target location, directions on movement if any, your time on target, shot requirements. What you won't be given is: distance to target(only one exception the CBS), wind speed, wind value.
Now when the match is over and hopefully we'll have time to head back out and have a free shoot, I fully expect the experienced and nonexperienced to share info.

I've seen the competitors, there will be some professional grade hitters out there and some who are just learning.

Now for the pistol portion, both shooters have to clear their fair share of pistol targets, before they can begin the rifle portion. Ain't gonna be no shooter/spectator mess going on here. Teammate got's to pull their load. You never know, some crazy RO might put pistol targets in your rifle lane, so you'd better clear the lane first. If you can't clear the lane with your pistol, shooting the pistol target with your rifle is not going to make anyone happy, especially the RO.

We'll all have fun

That would be cool as hell, got to shoot down a popper or something in the way before being able to see the rifle target hidden behind it.

My partner just bailed. Nice.

I was waiting till Monday to send in the reg since he started waffling when he found out he was going to have to shoot pistol, too. If anyone wants his slot I assume I can still send in both and we'll figure it all out later. Probably not many folks wanna slog thru it with a noob, though.

As for your partner, I don't understand the not wanting to shoot because there's a pistol string involved.

Its called putting your $$$$ where your mouth is.

Its real easy to talk shit to a new shooter with words like DOPE, Parallax, 27.778/???? and crap like that.

Or to look on the new high speed phone at that excell sheet with drop numbers on it.

But to go down range and do it?

Are you nuts?
