Just got done with my first batch of brass cleaned with SS media. Yup I was impressed. But how are you guys drying out the rods so as to prevent rusting? I would hate to have some moisture stuck in the middle of a mound of SS and rust my invest away....

I put a sock or wash cloth to the bottom of the pile to act as a wick.

The water gets wicked up and evaporates off the cloth.

The media then goes from wet to dry in 3 days instead of 3 months.

Dont even worrie about it. For one its SS.. 2 any little bit of rust will come right off in the next tumble..

I roll my brass through one of the media separation buckets from Frankford arsenal and most of the media comes out there. I have the bucket filled so that 1/2 of the basket is submerged and most of the media will come out there. Then I throw the brass in an oven that I got for cerakoting. An hour in there at 200 degrees and there isn't any moisture left anywhere. Everything is clean and dry and it's so much faster and easier than the 'ol walnut shell in the tumbler, especially for anything .22 caliber.

Btw, more than half of my media has been in the bottom of the bucket for more than a week now and I'm not worried about it rusting. I like the fact that it has ferrous content, makes cleaning up with a magnet a breeze.

But you do need to separate the media from the soiled liquid so your next load doesn't start out dirty.

I fish out the brass by hand (it helps to hold the brass underwater when you're shaking out the media still inside), then pour the contents of the tumbler through as fine meshed a strainer as I could find and into a plastic bucket. Some of the SS media still gets through the strainer so I run a rare earth magnet (made for holding a concealed pistol under a counter) in the water and the stray SS rods jump onto the magnet. I put all the media into a rubbermaid container, rinse with clean water, strain again, then return it to the rubbermaid and leave off the lid for several days or until I use it next, whichever comes first.
