I'm lost on this one, if he is new and has no reference as to how steel reacts when hit, how is he supposed to know? Spotting shots on square plate hanging from belt is easy compared to some of these new hanging systems.

I'd take another class or find some guys to shoot with, and gain some insight. Once you do, skim the high spots of the class you took and do not think of it as gospel. Spotting your impacts is job one, plain and simple, you are not going to be in a 2 man team where you have a spotter.
Losing track of your bullet is ok when shooting from a compromised position< prs stuff, barricades etc...., not in general shooting though.
Not to trash your gear, but I owned your exact scope, and have had friends say the same thing, but the 4-20 about taps out on focus at 800 yards. If you really want to see what is going on downrange, think about an optic upgrade. I'm not telling you to buy a 3K scope, a NF shv for around the same cost will offer clarity you do not have.
Provided your eye stays on the target, you can watch holes appear at 100 yards. There wasn't a hole, and then there was, so you watched it appear.
What is impossible is to observe the process of the bullet making the hole. Your eyes and brain work like a video camera in that your brain records a certain number of images per second, just like frames per second. We all know that we cannot observe the bullet as it flies; even if your brain catches an image of it, your brain disregards it as a mistake because it was not in the surrounding images.
So when the bullet punches the paper, you can theoretically see it, but both the bullet and paper are moving too fast to observe.

What about trace? I have observed my trace go into my target on a few occasions inside 400y. That is observing something traveling as fast as a bullet isn't it?
The reason you can see trace is its size. Your brain sees some part of the trace, frame after frame, so it does not disregard it. Have you ever thought you saw a mouse run by, but weren't sure? Imagine if a line of 500 mice ran by at the same speed. You would have no difficulty knowing that something was there. Trace is much larger than the bullet.

I think I misunderstood what you meant. I.E The process of the bullet passing through the target is too fast to see with the human eye.
If you are shooting rimfire or a 223 with a brake or suppressor I can imagine being able to see the hole happen. But I can't imagine how that would be possible with any significant caliber. The rifle is going to move when it recoils no matter how well you manage it. You are not stopping recoil you are managing it to move in a straight line. You will need a minimum of 10x to see it happen and there is no way in hell you can see it happen at 10x in one tenth of a second with the rifle recoiling. I can keep both eyes open and see dirt fly behind the target at 100 no problem with a 6.5 and no brake, splashes on steel too... but to be able to see a quarter inch hole happen in one tenth of a second the rifle would need to be incredibly still, as in not move at all. Then it would be like watching a target camera. I just can't see how that can happen in reality.
I don't generally loose sight of my target under recoil. If I do it is usually because my NPA and positioning are off. I could see a bad rifle to body fit making harder too.
I dont lose sight of mine either but the rifle would literally have to be dead still to be able to see a hole appear in 1/10 of a second. If the scope was moving at all it would make it impossible to see a quarter inch hole appear. I'm not saying it's impossible to keep the scope on the target I'm saying it's not possible to make out something that small while the scope is moving under recoil. If someone can hook a camera to their scope and show me how this is possible I will paypal them $10 lol. Has to be at least a 308 or 223 with no brake.
And three people are telling you, you are wrong from personal shooting experience. If I can see it when the scope is still, why can't I see it when the scope is moving?
Is that a serious question? Why can’t you see a .25-.30” hole appearing on paper in 1/10 of a second from 100 yards away with a magnified optic that’s moving? What magnification and caliber are you doing this with?
Yes that a serious question, what makes you think you can't see through a scope when its moving? How do you not loose sight of your target when can't see through your scope when its moving? I can see a .25-.30 hole appearing at 100 yards in 1/10 of a second. The question is, why can't you? Maybe less internet and more shooting might help.

Symantecs and science are both at play here. If you mean that you watched a piece of paper go from having no hole to having a hole, then it is totally possible. But if you mean you observed the process of the bullet pushing the paper out of its way, then science calls bull.
this is suppressed 308 at 100 yds, video is a little washed out because of the sun from behind reflecting off the glossy targets...sight picture stays on target, and looks like i could see it during the video but in real time, when the rifle is moving while the bullet impacts, i cant tell where its hitting til after everything settles...shooting at dirt at 100 yds is much easier to spot
This, exactly this. Scope stays on target, good management. Still, no way to see the hole happen on the paper until everything settles and that takes much longer than 1/10 of a second. I think these guys feel I am saying they cant manage recoil. That is not the case. I'm saying the human eye can't see/cant make out...something that tiny through a scope that is moving.
I’m not doubting anyone’s ability to watch trace or see impacts while they happen but I would also really like to see video of that.
I would honestly like to understand how much better I could get at managing recoil. I can hold on target about 75% better than the above video (no offense) but I’m nowhere close to being able to see my trace or bullet impacts on paper. I can see them on steel at distance pretty easily.

But that actually looks like some pretty good management on a 308 to me. I think if you videoed through your scope you would see that it moves a lot more than you perceive with your eye.

im a righty...everything in the video is also flipped because its reflected off a prism or something inside the scope cam setup
Ahh I got ya. I was thinking you were lefty because the reticle is jumping right. Try a little less pressure with your cheek weld and it wont jump left so hard. That was my issue anyway.
Turning down your mag makes it easier. I very rarely shoot over 10x at 100. Black dots appearing on white paper are the easiest thing to see.
that video is about as much movement as it gets...its suppressed, 308, and bipod on slick wood...its going to move way more that 6/6.5 that is braked, and way more than shooting off the dirt...if i put the spike feet on the bipod, it doesnt move at all lol it was worse case scenario pretty much, why i posted it
ive tried this and just learned to deal with it...ive even shot without a cheek piece...on slick wood, it goes left a little, always for me...on dirt with rubber, with spike feet on wood, or barricades, it doesnt

I might have to try one then. That sound always makes me smile -- when I can hear it. The little valley I shoot in tends to funnel wind towards the target so even a slight breeze sometimes makes hits inaudible. I'm putting a 30" round at a mile and will be shooting alone -- I think the blinker will be helpful.

Someone already posted a video. I can see his impacts, it appears to me he said he can see them in the video but he said he couldn't see them in real time. I can't make a video of what I can perceive and you can't. I don't think you are telling anyone they can't manage recoil. You are doing worse, you are telling them they didn't see something they did, because you haven't, and based on what you think the human eye can do. We have no idea what our brains are capable of. We like to pretend we know how they work.
To say I have seen it, is not to say I can see it every time. I know it is possible because I have seen it. The closest I have spotted my own trace was 300y. I was watching 223 bullets drop into prairie dogs. I can't think of seeing 100y impacts with anything but a 223 and a 22lr. My 6.5 creed with rl15 and 123s doesn't kick much harder than my 223. My 300wm before I took the brake off didn't kick as hard as my .308 with a suppressor. It sure was loud though.

Sorry bruh but when you make outlandish claims on the interwebz you are asking for someone to make you prove it. Kinda like when you offered to pay my expenses to shoot in a match if I would show up and I said OK then you changed to it to “oh but you have to clean the course and do better than anyone has ever done there and then I’ll reimburse you” lol.

Have someone on a zero’d rifle, in the scope...have some one else dial in some elevation/windage...soon as they shoot have that person drop a piece of paper in front of the objective and ask them where it hit
Just from my experience shooting matches all over...I’m fairly confident that I can Manage recoil and self spot ACCURATELY better than a large number...lots of guys say they saw a miss but don’t hit the follow up, go figure...i can usually call which half of the plate I hit better than guys on a spotter in club matches...it happens all the time
I’m still not confident I could call shots on paper at 100 when they hit paper tho, I can’t really say I’ve ever REALLY tried either...would be a good test

So, you think I am the only one who can see it in the video? I think its telling that you can't see it in the video.
I think it would be a crap shoot trying to see the impact, if you didn't know where it was going to land. Like in the video, once you know they are going to land, you can see the impacts better. I am sure it is not an advantage to see it. I am not sure why some are so adamant it can't be done. I might go dick around at the 100y range to see what rifles I can do it with, but I doubt it. Its not a skill I ever worked on or cared about, just something that happens sometimes. Seems like there are plenty of better ways to spend range time.
You need better training. You're in Texas, drive a few hours and go to Rifles Only.
If you even own a gun why don't you post a video of your results? I never said if you showed up you would get reimbursed, I said if he showed up. Try not adding whats not there before you know the back story. For the full back story get Lowlight to explain it to you. You might learn something.

Pretty sure he was saying exactly what I have been saying..... just because the scope stays on the target doesn’t mean you can see it happen in real time. And yes I can see holes on his target after the shot but it is exactly what I figured you were seeing. You are seeing the hole long after it is made and thinking you saw it get made just because it wasn’t there the last time the rifle was still enough for you to make out a hole. Because that’s exactly what the video shows.
Could you specify what you mean here? Can you see the impacts in the video, but not in real time?
