A very good point, and I apologize for futhering the ridiculous Savage/Remington theme.
On the original question:
You can't compare a cheap factory Remmy/Savage/etc rifle to a *quality* custom. The *quality* custom has been built from the ground up so that each individual part works perfectly, in concert with each other part. The factory rifle is built according to an engineering drawing that calls out dimensions with the widest tolerance zone the engineer thinks will still allow the rifle to "work".
A Savage with a new barrel really isn't a"custom", either...not to say there is ANYTHING wrong with them. Generally, the barrel is chambered without ever even laying eys upon the action it will go on. These generally work very well, incidentally, but it is still not a *quality* custom that has been individually fit and tuned.
In most cases, you get what you pay for.
In all cases, when you compare "good", "better" and "best", you'll see better costs a fair amount more than good, and is a fair amount better. Best costs a LOT more than better, but again, is only a fair amount better than better.
Hope that makes sense.
