How do u get into tactical comps?

I'm another fng. I am just recently getting into distance shooting. Just wanting to do something other than shoot off of a bench. Just curious as to how I could get into something like a tactical comp or even just some sort of shoot, maybe even just a place to shoot. Thanks for the help gents.

Sign up and show up. Simple as that. Go out and do it and from there you will learn. Looks like you got a good set up so get a good load worked up, chrono it and get some ballistic data if you can't get real world and go shoot. Best way to get started.

One way....
Find a match posted here on Sniper's Hide that interests you and/or is within a reasonable distance to travel to and attend.
Register for the match as soon as registration opens.
Ask lots of questions of the Match Director or whoever posted about the match so that you know the rules and what gear to bring.
Attend the match with an open mind and realizing you are just there for fun and to learn...ask lots of questions.
After the match you'll understand what you need to practice and what gear changes you might need to make.
Prepare to be addicted and broke once you get into this sport...

This is what I would do:

Get a complete grasp of the concept of dope (elevation adjustments) and wind.

Start shooting in positional and off in compromising positions.

Go to a match, listen and learn. Take a copious amount of notes about the stages, what you did and didn't do, and how you could improve. Bring the right gear but don't bring the kitchen sink. You can get away with just about any match with the following items:

Rifle
Ammo (multiple mags are a plus if you have a DBM)
Sling
Rear bag
Dope Card (waterproof)
Mildot Master or Calculator
Notebook
Kestral Wind Meter (maybe)

Nothing is a better teacher than experience. Go in with the right attitude and willingness to learn and you'll be surprised at the knowledge you come away with.

awesome ill do what i can. thanks for the good info guys really. how much ammo do you guys usually burn through in one of these things?

Depends on the style and size of the match. 2 or 3 day events can burn anywhere between 150-250 rounds.

But if you want to be competitive you will burn a ton more in practice then you shoot in matches.

I am about 80% through building the rifle i plan on using. Im dying to finish EVEN more now so i can try a tactical comp. I gotta lotta loading to do though from what it sounds like.

Duffy- Check out Sniper Golf in Maxton, NC on June 30th. It was a low key match with some great guys when I did it in the spring. I'll be there. There are also matches in NE NC that pop up here from time to time. I think the facility in Moyock holds some matches too.

I'm new to the comp game too...I've shot 4 matches so far. I would also add that taking a class from guys who actively compete is a great idea too. I just took a class put on by Knight (above) and the PMG team and I found the info there invaluable. I changed so many things about how I shoot so that I can get faster and smoother. There's precision shooting and then there's precision shooting under the clock... your errors really start to appear under the time stress. If I'm not mistaken, I think Scott from PMG lives in VA Beach too so you've got an incredible competitive resource basically in your same zip code... look him up.

For loading, I would go with factory loads to start... just one less variable for you to manage. SW Ammo, Corbon, and FGMM will all work to get you started.

Look up a guy named Hogstooth here on the hide, he runs some classes and has been seen lurking in the shadows of a few matches. And he is right in your neighborhood out on that unholy side of our state.

I would definitely recomend one of Knight's classes.I have been through 2 of them and it has helped me greatly.He is an outstanding instructor.
