I took my new custome rifle to the range today for the first time and it's amazing! I shot five groups of five all under .5 MOA. The best was .25 MOA.
So my question is: How do you know what your rifle is capable of? My guess is that you'd have to clamp it in a vice, shoot inside, and have loads that are exacly the same. Is there a way other than this to really know?

Re: how do you know what your rifle is capable of?

Doing exactly what you just did is whow you tell. Iwould clamp it in a vice in a tunnel and redefine that zero. But only if I was shooting tunnel vice clamp matches. LOL Just go shoot it because the gun is capable of ???.??MOA when it shoots itself. You have to see what its capable of with you behind the rifle. You won't get to much better than what your allready getting though. At least I couldn't. I suppose your allready using bipods and bags or something very steady.

^^^^ this is the truth that I have learned many times.

Re: how do you know what your rifle is capable of?

I see it as a combination of shooter and rifle.

My custom 30-06 has given me .234 groups at 100 yards. I was able to achieve that with a cold bore. I never got it again. but that showed me it's possible.

so I take what my rifle can do best and call it that

if I suck and get get 1moa out of it... well it's a 1 moa rifle as long as I'm shooting it

haha..you are going to get some seriuos answers as well as some funny ass responses to your question..

I will take the high road and say the rifle will shoot as good as your ability will allow but by nio means will that most likely be to the guns potentail and that is not a bust on you but most will tell you our guns are capable of out shooting us.

moser. </div></div>Is that wrong, the gun is only able to do what you can make it do. Even a 1/4MOA gun will do 2 MOA if thats all the shooter can do. I have a 60lb bench gun that takes most all human error out but anything else will require you to do what you can to get the best results. If he is allready getting 1/4 MOA then how much better can you get? Really. Good shooting OP. Not trying to be a smart ass earlier but just shooting it is really all you can do. Good luck.
