How does a Remington 5R like 168gr ammo?

I am looking into getting one. I read they shoot 175 very well. How do the 168 perform?

I want to sell my 700P for a 5R and have a lot of 168gr ammo... just want to see if it will perform as well in a 5R or if I should shoot it all before I change rifles.

I did the exact same thing you did and sold a 700P I had laying around to try out the 5R and subsequently had a lot of 168g left over as well.

The 168g shoots fine for me but I did start seeing a difference with the 175g, especially at distances over 600 yards and when wind comes in as a variable.

I don't think you'll notice much under 700-800 yards.

Some of it is a matter of what your gun likes but my 5R loves the FGMM 168 ammo. It is actually all I shoot in it. I've had groups of .5MOA at 300 yards consistantly.

I shoot 168gr Fed.SMK within 600 yard, and prefer 175gr. beyond that. 168gr will reach out to 1k, but 175gr does better job at it.

If you have 168gr. ammo laying around, I say shoot them. Or if its Fed. SMK, you can sell them to me for cheap, haha

Interestingly, In my 20'' SPS-T with 1:11 twist, the 168 SMKs group slightly better than the 175 SMKs in shorter ranges. However, the 175 grs really begin to outperform the 168 grain at distances longer than 500 or so yards. I also now exclusively shoot 175's only - I concluded I was better off mastering the dope of only one load plus the added convenience of not having to deal with differerent loads and saving on buys. Well worth the slight drop in accurq y IMO.

Every rifle is different. The only one I have ever had my hands on shoot everything you fed it like a hammer. If you have it laying around shoot it. Then buy 175's, they don't cost any more to load or buy loaded ammo. So why not. JAA

Also, if your 700P action is true, or without major issues, why not just shoot out the barrel and then get a 5R 1:11.25 twist barrel? Depending on your caliber, there are a few in the wtb/sale sections. The HS stock on your 700P isn't that different and the only other differernce is that a 5r is a bit smoother since its not coated by the black finish found on the P and SPS, but after several hundred rounds, some dry firing qnd steel wool, my SPS is comparably smooth.

I thought about it but I have a buyer for my rifle so I think I'm going to sell it complete. It is a package form Remington with the Leupold scope and rings and Harris bipod. I want to build something more to my liking. I want a different stock, trigger, scope, rings and base. The only think I really like on my rifle is the action, I think it'll be cheaper to sell it all and start over.

How do you like it compared to the 700p? </div></div>

I had some minor issues with the 700P, which is why I opted to sell it and give the 5R a go.

The 700P I had was brand new in the box when I got it, but it had a horrible trigger and for whatever reason I could never get the bolt to cycle smoothly. After taking everything apart numerous times, cleaning, lubing, checking for burrs or obstructions I could never get it to not fight me when trying to cycle it. The finish was also poor.

A slightly shorter barrel and the fact that it cleans alot easier, has a nicer finish and I have had no complaints about it have me thinking I made the right decision.

It has a Leupold MK4 3.5-10, Leupold Mark 4 rings/base, Timney trigger, HS Precision M24 stock on it as well now.

Shoots fine but once she gets a taste of some 175's ohh man neither of you are ever ganna look back
