How does this sound for a first build?

Hey guys I've made my mind up and started collecting parts. It will be done by Jon Beanland.

Surgeon RSR
Rock 22" barrel heavy fluted MTU 1/10 (finished at 20") (???)in the safe
McMillan A3 forest camo (on the way)
BDL bottom metal for now
Timney trigger
Leupold scope
AAC 7.62-SD muzzle brake adapter.

What do you think

Man I hate to say it, but .308. I figure with the 7mm I got from you, my 300 rum, 6.5 grendel, etc. I need one I can shoot a little cheaper! Although I'd trade anyone here for a 6.5 barrel for a creedmore, but I got a good deal on this barrel and other parts.

Hows the new baby man?

The cheapest caliber to shoot is the 223 or 223AI. I have ran both to 850yards with ease. It gets tough in the Oklahoma wind sometimes but teaches you a lot. I just built a 6.5CM and haven't had a chance to really get out and play with it yet.

The baby is good. He was 9lb 5 oz at birth and at his two week check up he was 9lb 12oz and had grown 1 1/2". He sleeps for 3-4 hours at a time in the night in between feedings, which is nice since I am back at work now.

Whenever you want to bring that stock over to be bedded just hollar. I'm still game for showing you how. It is how I learned. A friend showed me. Just give me a day or two's notice so I can make sure I will have 3-4 hours to do it.

sounds like a great build but do you mind if i ask why so short on the barrel. i saw that your threading the barrel for a brake do you have plans to put a can on it?
im not criticizing just curious because im researching a new barrel too and thinking 26" in .308. let me know if im missing something major here.

If you look at some of his other posts he is looking into an AAC suppressor.

Thanks for the posts guys. I'm hoping it will be a good one! I plan to get a lot of learning out of it.

I need to get out and shoot my .223's more, that would definitley help a ton. Glad the boy is doing good! That's how my first was. He would sleep great in between feedings and be up at 7:30. Very nice when you gotta work.

I'm thinking about shopping for a mcmillan for the 7mm. I'm going to give it some thought, but thinking I may "need" one of the A5 or something for it. I do want to get with you and bed it though once I get it figured out...

balls check this article out seems to explain barrel lengths on the .308 and .300 win mag. It may make you change your mind. I'm planning on the 7.62-SD as of now. http://www.tacticaloperations.com/SWATbarrel/

The problem with 223, is it lacks kinetic energy downrange. Im starting to run into the issue of star-targets + Distance + 223 = fail.

I was out in the desert yesterday planting 62grainers on a star target at ~400 yards. It wouldnt cook off

But other than that, its a fantastic caliber to train with.

thanks for the link kpk i hadnt read that particular article however i have read this months special weapons article on the same subject and see as i am not going to be shooting a suppressed rifle and im shooting 175 gr and 178 grain bullets id like to have the longer barrel. however you do now have me wondering if 24" barrel with a muzzle break would be better.
lol well now i have more research to do.

Here's an update! I've got everything but bottom metal and gunsmith work to go...I was going to use BDL, but dang how nice DBM would be.

What do you guys think? Timney or Jewell trigger? I have one of each I could swap around.

Thanks! We actually just bought this land last February in SW, OK. I'm in Elk City and the farm is about 20 miles south. It's been an awesome place so far!

You have to rub it in on someone that did not get to pull a trigger on a deer.

Nice rifle build. You have good taste! I would go with the Jewel trigger over the Timney if I had a choice. The Jewel is just sooo smooth.

Thanks Bullzeye I think it will turn out great. I am thinking about going with a Badger FTE for the brake now. It'll be awhile before I get a suppressor and I'm sure I'll want something different by then...

I already took the Jewell off the other rifle and have it boxed up for the smith!

I like the jewell too it's just so thin, but it seems to break nicely. more of a target style seems like. The Timney is perfect for the hunting rifle.

What do you guys think on the brake? Do the quick detach or badger. It may be a year or more if I ever get a suppressor...

If you think you will get the suppressor then just go with the AAC Brakeout. No sense in buying twice and it works pretty well as a brake by itself. The Badger is probably a little better as a brake goes but then you'll have to remove it for a cyclone or get the brakeout for the 7.62 SD.
